From my own personal experience and from what people have told me most of us see our bodies when we think about ourselves. This gives weight to the idea that people identify with their bodies. It is also more common for people to identify with a picture of their bodies they make up in their heads than to identify with the body as it is. Many people see themselves as older, younger, heavier, lighter, bigger or smaller than they really are and it is the image they hold of themselves that influences how they feel about themselves.
Feelings Dictate the Chemical Balance
Our feelings determine the chemical balance in our bodies. The body simply obeys the mind that commands it. When we feel anxious, fearful and under stress the chemicals released into the blood stream prepare us to fight or escape. The chemicals in our blood keep us on high alert but it is our feelings that cause those chemicals to be released in the first place. Prescribed medication seeks to adjust the chemical balance in order to address anxiety; depression and stress where as Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy address the feelings that cause the conditions like depression, anxiety and stress.
An Effective Alternative to Medication
It is how we feel about ourselves that determines our well being so wouldn’t you think that people would seek to address their feelings in order to resolve a problem caused by them. The emphasis for years has been on the treatment of conditions like depression using prescribed medication but fortunately this is now changing. More and more doctors are referring their patients to government approved Hypnotherapists because they are realising that long term use of medication is not answer.
Permanent Solution
When choosing a therapist to address conditions such as depression, anxiety and insomnia it is important you ask if s/he addresses the emotional root cause. Not to do so would be like putting a plaster or an open wound – it just wouldn’t hold!

Healing through Repression Release by Clara Nathan
Feelings and Emotions
Society looks favourably on people who freely experience feelings of joy and happiness but frowns on unbridled expressions of sadness and pain. From a very early age we are programmed to stuff down these feelings with no regard for the consequence.
Feelings and emotions are there to be expressed and rather than inhibiting their expression if children are encouraged to express them appropriately then there would be no need for them to seek refuge in alcohol, drugs or over eating.
Our emotions belong to us and if we choose to hide or suppress them they will find ways of expression and in many cases these will be self destructive. Painful emotions that we have buried in the subconscious are called repressions and they will find expression, one way or another.
Repressions Manifesting as Symptoms or Destructive Behaviours
If we are involved in any behaviour that is harmful to us then the underlying cause for the behaviour will ultimately be an emotional one. This is an example of how a repression finds expression.
A person who continues to over eat knowing the disastrous consequences of such behaviour has simply found eating food as an alternative to expressing feelings they have suppressed.
People are not normally consciously aware that they are suppressing their feelings. It is a habit they have learned and as such it is something they do subconsciously. In order to reverse the process the subconscious needs to be accessed in order to uncover the emotional root cause of the destructive behaviour … like over eating and this is where hypnosis proves to be an invaluable tool.
Healing through Repression Release
Here at Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic in Peel, Isle of Man my wife Mary and I are in private practice using both Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy to show people how to access their subconscious and make those changes they want in their lives. The presenting symptoms of the people who seek our help are the physical manifestations of problems with an emotional root cause. We help people uncover and resolve underlying cause of their conditions at source, the unconscious. Once the the negative emotion associated with their symptoms is released through abreaction healing is inevitable.

Following is story from the book The Power of the Subconscious Mind by Dr Joseph Murphy which clearly illustrates how, by harnessing the power of the subconscious mind, we can achieve great things:
Once Enrico Caruso, the great operatic tenor, was struck with stage fright. Spasms caused by intense fear constricted the muscles of his throat. His vocal chords felt paralysed, useless. He stood back- stage, already in costume, while perspiration poured down his face. In just moments he was supposed to go out on stage and sing before an eager audience of thousands.
Trembling, he said, “ I can’t sing. They will all laugh at me. My career is finished.”
He turned to go back to his dressing room. Then suddenly he stopped and shouted. “The Little Me is trying to strangle the Big Me within!”
He turned toward the stage again and stood taller. “ Get out of here,” he commanded, addressing the Little Me. “ The Big Me wants to sing through me.”
By the Big Me, Caruso meant the limitless power and wisdom of his subconscious mind. He began to shout, “Get out, get out, the Big Me is going to sing!”
His subconscious mind responded by releasing the vital forces within him. When the call came, he walked out on stage and sang gloriously and majestically. The audience was enthralled.
Caruso understood the two levels of mind – the conscious or rational, and the subconscious or irrational level. Your subconscious mind is reactive. It responds to the nature of your thoughts. When your conscious mind (Caruso’s Little Me) is full of fear, worry and anxiety, the negative emotions these create in your subconscious mind (the Big Me) are released. They flood the conscious mind with a sense of panic, foreboding, and despair. When this happens to you, you can follow the example of the great Caruso. You can speak affirmatively and with a deep sense of authority to the irrational emotions generated in the deeper mind. You can say, “Be still. Be quiet. I am in control. You must obey me. You are subject to my command. You cannot intrude where you don’t belong.”
You will be fascinated to see what happens when you speak authoritatively and with conviction to the irrational movement of your deeper self. Your mind will be flooded with harmony and with peace. The subconscious is subject to the conscious mind. That is why it is called subconscious or subjective.
Here at their private practice, Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic, in Peel, Isle of Man Xavier and Mary Nathan teach people how to harness the power of their subconscious minds to achieve their goals.
Catharsis and the release of repressed psychic energy
The essence of repression as described by Sigmund Freud consists simply in the act of turning – and keeping – something away from the conscious. Repressed material exerts continuous pressure from the subconscious mind, where it resides, toward the conscious mind which repressed it in the first place. This continuous and constant psychic pressure from the subconscious has to be held in equilibrium by an equal and opposing constant unrelenting counter pressure. It follows then that to maintain a repression requires a constant expenditure of energy.
Freud insisted that the purpose of repression is the avoidance of what he termed unpleasure. The repression consisting of thoughts and feelings will have done its job if the negative feelings associated with it are not experienced. Therefore to release a repression those very feelings one sought to escape from must be fully experienced and the thoughts filed as experiences.
Once filed as an experience without the emotive charge the once repressed experience can now be used like any other experience to help us cope should the same or similar challenge ever face us again in the future.
Without the necessary emotional resources being available and on file in the subconscious a child experiencing a traumatic event may find the normal mental processes being suspended. This will of course occur unconsciously and the event is said to be repressed. This is a survival mechanism used by a mind overwhelmed by an experience that cannot be be dealt with at the time. The event is not forgotten but kept in a kind of ‘cold storage’ to be dealt with when the necessary mental and emotional resources have been acquired. In order to ensure that the repressed material is not forgotten or ignored forever the gap, in what was supposed to be learned from the experience, is replaced by a physical symptom somewhat like a calling card.
What happens in session
In Analytical Hypnotherapy the client is guided into a relaxed state of mind with conscious analytical mind in suspension. While in this light state of hypnosis the client is then instructed to report whatever thoughts, feelings and memories that emerge. The client is reminded to report what emerges in the order in which it is revealed and to refrain from excluding any of the associations on the grounds that they are judged too trivial, irrelevant, shameful or secret. Success of the therapy depends on the client complying with this fundamental rule to reveal everything that emerges.
It is rare for a therapist to come across a client who does not try to reserve some area for himself – a no-go area if you like. Therapy is prevented access to this area of the mind classed as off-limits. This is done subconsciously by the client in an attempt to protect the repression and is is called resistance by Freud.
Resistance is an inevitable and important part of the therapeutic process. It is disappointing to a therapist if unable to provoke these resistances and demonstrate them to the client. In fact overcoming these resistances is an essential function of therapy.
The most important ingredient in Hypno-Analysis or Analytical Hypnotherapy is rapport between client and therapist. It is this trust that encourages the transference of feelings on to the therapist and thus giving the client the opportunity to resolve emotional issues that have been repressed. The therapist takes on the qualities of the person with whom the client needs to resolve these issues and it is common for the client to see saw between admiring and loving the therapist to feeling outright hostility toward the therapist. It is by means of this phenomenon that transference becomes a powerful tool to access the the no go areas and to secure repression release.
Psychotherapy by ~briggsdj2
When a repression is located the client may report it the way a TV reporter would report from the scene of a crime. The client therefore describes the traumatic incident in the past tense and as if it had happened to someone else. The therapist would then direct the client to relive the incident in the present as if it is happening right now. The client would then regress in time and experience the incident fully this time without any interruption to the normal mental processes which occurred when it did happen all those years ago and resulted in the debilitating symptoms the client is now presenting.
The client would then be directed to experience the incident over and over again until every scrap of emotional charge is released and the client sees the incident as just another experience without any of the emotional response that once accompanied it. The first time through the incident may see the client crying uncontrollably and with each subsequent reliving of the incident the therapist will notice the client revealing more and more detail. Eventually the client will run through the incident without showing any emotion and in a bored kind of tone. This is normally the signal that all the negative emotion associated with the repression has been released and it is not uncommon to see the client let out a sigh when it is complete.
The role of the therapist
It is not therapist’s job to advise the client, offer any explanations evaluations or judgements during this process but rather allow the client to fully experience the emotions that emerge without interruption and be kept on task. The therapist must at all times recognise that the client is the supreme authority in his own world and the therapist has not authority to tell the client what anything means or how the client should or should not interpret what comes up. Any therapist that does so is not serving the client but his own ego. The therapist is like a guide on a safari. He ensures that the client is on the right path, has bullets in his rifle and is safe. When the time comes it is the client who is paying to shoot the lion not the guide. A good therapist will ensure that the client feels safe and is fully engaging in the process and not just reporting from a safe distance. Though the therapist will not be advising the client about how to view or interpret anything that emerges in session he will often question the client to clarify what is said and to cause the client to question beliefs stubbornly being held on to.
As part of my own training as a Hypno-Psychotherapist I was required to undergo the therapy before receiving my qualification. How else could you gauge the effectiveness of the treatment you intend to administer if you yourself have not experienced it? I found it a very rewarding and insightful experience during which I released a number of repressions and as a result I cured myself of a number of conditions I had suffered from all of my life.
Following are just some of the conditions my wife and I treat at our private practice in Peel, Isle of Man:
Depression, Panic Attacks, Anxiety, Sleeping Difficulties, Post Traumatic Stress, Underachievement, Lack of Confidence, Fears and Phobias, Irritable Bowel, Smoking, Eating Disorders… and many more.

Following are links to articles I have written on topics related to this post:
Our physical well being is a reflection of our emotional and spiritual well being. Our physical appearance is a creation of mind that is an indication of what is going on inside of us. If the island you can see is the physical aspect of who you are then the ocean all around you represents your emotional and spiritual aspects. As you sit on the island beach looking out over the horizon you are consciously oblivious to that other world beneath the waves. This is how it is with each one of us as we go about our daily activities oblivious to the forces within, that control everything we think, say and do.
Inner Conflict Sabotages our Efforts to Change
If you are over weight then chances are you don’t feel good about it. If you do feel good about being overweight then you are not overweight and you should stop reading this article. Feeling bad about any aspect of yourself is an indication of inner conflict and you are sabotaging every effort you exert to make the changes you know you want. The secret to making any change is in overcoming the dynamic of mind that resists change.
Knowing what you want and feeling what you want are two very separate experiences, the dynamic of which, many people fail to understand. Though everybody realises at some stage in their lives that there are times when they cannot get themselves to do what they want to do, they still keep trying anyway. How many people do you know who have tried to lose weight by cutting down on the amount they eat and exercising more only to keep failing miserably? How many times have you given up on diets and exercise regimes that you simply could not stick to? Every time you fail at something you lose a little more self confidence which makes it harder the next time you try.
If you feel overweight then you are thinking about yourself in a certain way. The way you are thinking about yourself is definitely not the way slim people think about themselves. Here already evident is the dynamic between thought and feeling. The feeling creates the atmosphere for the kind of thinking that it generates and the thinking creates more of these same feelings until you are trapped inside a cycle of thoughts and feelings that attract people and circumstances to create even more of the same thoughts and feelings. The thinking directs your energy and that is why you find yourself thinking more frequently and more intensely about food than someone who does not feel as you do about yourself. The point here is the importance of the interaction between thought and feeling that many people fail to realise.
Change Your Mind if You Want to Change
In order to make any change in your life you must first create the change in your mind. The mind commands and the body obeys. The only trouble with this is the mind is sending conflicting commands so no change ever occurs. Your first and most important task is to create in your mind the change that you want for yourself.
To lose weight you will need to change the thoughts and feelings you have toward yourself to thoughts and feelings you would have about yourself if you were thinner.
So how do you change your mind? The answer is very simple and lies in a feeling called Hypnosis.
Hypnosis is the Key
Hypnosis is a feeling everyone naturally experiences but few know how to achieve deliberately. It is unfortunate that most people associate hypnosis with the antics of stage hypnotists and so never take the feeling seriously as a means to make lasting changes in their lives. Hypnosis is a feeling anyone can learn to achieve deliberately and for that reason I created an audio that does just that. By regularly playing the audio you eventually learn to experience the feeling of hypnosis and in becoming familiar with the feeling your mind automatically learns how to get it back every time you choose to experience the feeling.
In order to lose weight the first step is to teach yourself how to achieve the feeling of hypnosis. Once you can do that you are in a position to change the thoughts and feelings you feel toward yourself to the the thoughts and feelings of a thinner human being. You then wake up every morning feeling so appreciative of being you because you start noticing changes immediately. You realise how powerful your mind is and for the first time in a very long time you start to say what you really think and you start to do what you say. In other words your mind and heart start to work as one. So when you say that will not longer eat certain kinds of bread, or that you will never again use oil to cook then you know you won’t. Doubt will no longer exist.
It becomes easy then to follow my final instructions for you to lose the weight you want in the time frame you choose. I suggest 30lbs in 90 days but that is not a hard and fast rule. You choose but it is important that the mindset is correct before you begin.
Download the audio “Introduction to Hypnosis” and put it on your iPod or MP3 player. You could burn it to CD if you wish. Play the audio “Introduction to Hypnosis” every day for at least 2 weeks before following my final instructions. Some people play it every night in bed before falling asleep others find time during the day or even before getting up in the morning. Do what suits you but it is a very crucial element for success in this method.
Final Instructions to Losing 30lbs in 90 Days:
Part 1
For a period of 3 days eat only meat and fish. No bread, no rice no vegetables, no pasta , no sugar, no alcohol, no cereals, no chocolate, no salt, and definitely no oil or butter.
Eat a small bowl of porridge in the morning for breakfast and change to a sugar substitute like Splenda if you need to sweeten it.
If you get peckish you can eat slices of ham or chicken. You can also eat fat free cottage cheese and fat free yoghurt whenever you feel hungry.
To cook meat I suggest you slice onions and use these slices of onions as a bed to fry the meat on but no oil.
Drink plenty of water but no fizzy or sugar based drinks.
You can also eat boiled eggs but no salt.
Part 2
Having eaten as I have suggested above for three days. You will notice some major changes physically, emotionally and mentally. Your thoughts and feelings are in line with your desires and your life takes on a whole new meaning. What started off as losing weight becomes much more than that and you feel great. You realise how easy it is to lose weight and to stop eating and drinking those things that prevented you from feeling as good as you feel from not putting them in your body for three days. You are now ready to embark on a completely new style of life. Certain foods and drinks now simply repulse you and you know you will never eat or drink them again. Following is a plan you now find easy to follow and you continue to play the audio throughout the 90 days program.
For the 90 days you eat three meals a day. You have a choice of porridge or eggs in the morning. Meat or fish for lunch and again meat, eggs or fish for dinner. You can eat as much sliced ham, chicken and cottage cheese or yoghurt in between meals but will find yourself doing less of that as time goes on. Weigh yourself at the end of every week and take your measurements to see the progress you are making. It is very important to maintain this high protein diet for at least 50 days. After that you can start introducing vegetables, and fruit into your diet. Wholemeal brown bread can also be introduced but never more than 2 slices of wholemeal brown bread per day.
You will find that you have more energy for exercise and I highly recommend some easy Yoga type stretches and postures in the morning followed by a few minutes of meditation or silent sitting.
Walking is the best exercise and I highly recommend a daily routine of walking brusquely for between 30 minutes to an hour.

The Middle Way
There is no need to overdo anything. You are now finding the “middle way” advocated by Buddha. You are now experiencing a life of moderation and you feel happier and more alive than you have ever been.
This is a 90 day journey that prepares you for the more important journey of your life without all that extra baggage, physically represented by the weight you are carrying and emotionally by the heavy heart you carry around full of regret, past failures and apathy. Having taken the time to purify yourself physically you have also triggered an emotional and spiritual response that propels you positively into the rest of a very bright future for yourself and everyone you touch.
We spend most of our lives see-sawing between our feelings. Sometimes it might feel as if you are on a boat on the ocean at the mercy of the weather not realising that not only does the boat you are in have oars but it also has an engine. We wake up every morning not knowing what to expect and if we take the time to think about it most of us would probably imagine that life happens to us and how we feel depends on external circumstances quite out of our control. In this article I would like to explain how you are responsible for how you feel.
Happiness like sadness is a feeling. You can’t explain a feeling all you can do is feel it. You can explain a thought but you cannot feel a thought. A thought is not a feeling. I can think about the sea and even remember or imagine a time I spent by the sea. I can even conjure up the sound of the sea, the smell of the sea and the feel of the spray on my skin. The feeling I associate with this thought could be sadness because I am sitting on the beach crying because my wife has left me for another man or it could be joyful as I look out over the horizon in anticipation of seeing the boat that is bringing my son home from war.
The thought you think affects your mood and makes you feel how you feel. The thought propels you into the feeling and once you are feeling the feeling your thoughts are hijacked and you keep thinking those thoughts and making yourself feel more of those same feelings.
Normally when we are in “idle” mode thoughts come and go. When we give a thought our attention we are directing ourselves into a feeling. It is how we choose our thoughts that determines our mood and the way we feel. The thoughts we pay attention to create our feelings. So you can conclude that the more time you spend paying attention to happy thoughts the happier you will become. By the same token the more time you spend thinking about sad things the sadder you feel.
By thinking happy thoughts you make yourself feel happy. Thinking sad thoughts makes you feel sad. You are the only one in there with you. You are the one doing the thinking and you are the one choosing the thoughts to think. So, you are the one responsible for how you feel.
Knowing this then why won’t you choose to think the thoughts that will bring you feelings of happiness, joy and love? The reason is habit. The mind has gotten into bad habits. Because you have never taken control of your ship and directed your mind to think what you want your mind has been steering the boat. The boat has gotten used to docking at certain ports and to steer a new course to happier destinations you must now take control of the steering wheel.
Like any change you want to make in your life some effort must be exerted initially. By persistence in choosing the thoughts to focus upon you change the old pattern and you get used to a new way of being in the world.
One very good way to trick your mind into reversing its attention from sad to happy thoughts is to regularly ask your self the question “What can I be grateful for right now in my life?” Simply finding things in your life to be grateful for has the affect of changing the direction of your thoughts from negative to positive and so altering how you feel. Start the day saying thank you, spend the day saying thank you and end the day saying thank you. This is a sure way to attract more love and happiness into your life. .
Keep finding things to be really grateful for like things that you have, things that you do and things that you are and you will start feeling happier. You cannot feel bad while you are feeling grateful so gratitude is the short cut back to happiness. The happiness then makes it easier for you to remember happy memories and the cycle continues. Photographs are a great way of getting you to kick start happy memories.
Before I get out of bed every morning I say thank you to my bed and feel a great sense of appreciation that I have such a comfortable bed to sleep in. I look across at my wife and I think how thankful I am to have another day to spend with her. I look across at a photograph of myself as a boy of 3 years old and I thank the child within me. I thank the clothes I am going to put on. I say thank you to my body for being fit and healthy and the list goes on. I spend at least 10 minutes every morning doing this before even getting out of bed and continue to do this during the day as often as I remember to do. I thank everyone I meet (not out loud but in my heart) and send them good feelings. What you send out comes back to you 100 fold. I do it and it works. I am a very happy man most of the time and when I am not I know exactly how to become happy again and I do!
Here is a poem by a lady who expresses everything I say here in this post but far more eloquently. Shipwrecked by tnderhrt23
The Universe wants to give you everything you desire. When I say everything I mean EVERYTHING and this includes material possessions, things you want to do and even the way you want to be. So if you want to be rich, if you want a new car, if you want that promotion, if you want to find your perfect partner, the Universe wants to make your wishes come true. You might then ask why don’t you already have all the things you desire if the Universe wants you to have them? The problem is you were given free will. The Universe cannot give you what you say you want when you live as if you do not want what you ask for. It is like saying one thing and meaning another. You have to mean what you say and do what you mean for the Universe to comply. You must make the effort to understand the laws that govern our existence if you are to use those same laws to enhance your life. It is not a coincidence that one man is rich and another is poor. There are no coincidences in life. We create what we have and if you don’t like what you have then you must endeavour to understand how you created what you have in the first place and let go of your victim mentality. You are in charge and you have always been in charge of what you have, what you do and what you are. You just never realised how you created it all.
The thoughts that enter your mind are like birds that fly across the sky. You can choose to follow the trajectory of any thought that crosses the sky of your mind and by the same token you also have the choice not to follow a thought. Some thoughts when followed lead to feelings of sadness, anger and fear. It is like getting on a bus to go to a place you know you don’t like. Why get on the bus in the first place and why keep taking the bus to the same horrible destination? You and only you can choose your thoughts. There is nobody else inside you telling you what to think. The thoughts you choose to dwell upon affect your feelings and it is your feelings that attract the people and circumstances that create what you have. If you dwell on sad miserable thoughts then the destination will always be sadness and misery. If you choose to dwell on happy thoughts then you will feel happy. This is a basic law of the Universe but one that seems to get missed by the majority of people nowadays who would prefer to believe in some power outside themselves to blame for their misery and hardship.
So when someone annoys you or upsets you you have the free will to choose how to think about that. You can choose to give your power away and allow your thoughts to be hijacked by the person who upset or annoyed you. By doing this you are attracting even more upset and annoyance but most people just keep going like the hamster on the treadmill behaving as if they had no choice. By choosing to think positively about anything that happens you are in affect reclaiming your power of choice and you are no longer a victim. If you choose to think positively then you attract positive results and get what you desire. You get back what you give out. It is as simple as that!
There is effort required to break old habits. You have spent your life being led by the nose by thoughts that have made you feel bad and you never realised that you had a choice. To break this habit you must develop a new habit. Think about all the things you love. Not just material things, think also of the things you love doing and the things you love being. Keep your mind occupied by everything you love and then only speak about the things you love. If you do this you are making an effort to change the old patterns and you are choosing to take responsibility for your life and your happiness.
Every morning first thing before you get out of bed set the wheels of positive thought in motion by choosing to think about things you love. Use every excuse to talk about what you love throughout your day. Rather than join in conversations that involve speaking badly of another compliment your colleagues at work at every opportunity and deliberately find things about them to compliment. Love your ability to change, love your awareness of how lucky you are, love the clothes you wear, love the food you eat simply find excuses to think and speak about what you love and before you know it you will be attracting into your life all the best things in life and more because the Universe responds to love quicker than it does to anything else in this world. You are the miracle in your own life. All you have to do to reclaim your happiness is wake up from your self imposed sleep and take charge of your life by choosing happy thoughts to dwell upon. Your thoughts affect your feelings and it is your feelings that are heard by the Universe. If you spend most of your day feeling sad then that is what the Universe hears that you want and it goes out of its way to pile on even more sadness and misery. Feel what you want and trust the Universe to give you what you feel. Seen in this light doesn’t it make sense to deliberately choose to feel happy?
