About Agreement in Therapy

Accepting

You have come to me in order to embark on a course in Hypno-Psychotherapy because something is bothering you. This something is what we call your presenting symptoms and you have no conscious control over them. Your symptoms are bothering you to the degree that they are interfering with your life and preventing you from leading a full life.

The role of symptom

The symptom or symptoms you report, is your subconscious way of getting your attention, and it could be any number of things like or nail biting, or over eating, blushing, rage, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, gambling, or M.E. There are as many symptoms as there are people in the world. Important to note is that your symptom is telling you something you need to hear. Like a child crying for your attention, by ignoring your symptom or suppressing it simply results in your symptom being intensified. The symptom you present is the reason you have come to me for help.

There is a subconscious reason for the symptom

There is no point in simply getting rid of the symptoms without understanding the reason or reasons why they are there. Your mind will simply replace the symptoms and go on doing so until you resolve the underlying cause or causes of the symptoms you report.

Anything that you deem is too painful or unacceptable is repressed by your subconscious mind and that is a basic defence mechanism of every human being. Whatever it is you buried in the subconscious you most likely did so as a child. As an adult your subconscious has given you your symptoms as a way of telling you that you are now ready to deal with that buried material that once overwhelmed you as a child.

The symptoms you report are evidence that such repressed material exists in your subconscious mind and are in effect the alarm clock going off in the subconscious for you to wake up to go to work on yourself.

Your conscious mind is a very strict censor and anything entering or leaving it is carefully monitored. It is for this reason you are not in a position to recall, at will, the root cause of the problem you report.

The steps involved in creating the healing therapeutic environment

The first step to resolving the problems you report is to create conditions for the making conscious of what has been repressed. To do this you must first consciously agree to the following conditions which form the basis for your treatment:

  • To pay for your therapy according to the terms agreed upon.
  • To give me at least 24 hours notice of cancellation of a session.
  • To report every thought and feeling which comes to mind during the session.
  • You report whatever comes to mind without regard for logical order and report them even if you regard them as trivial, impolite or shameful.
  • You write down the dreams you have and submit them to me at the start of each session.
  • Any communication between us during the treatment, written or verbal is kept private and confidential.
  • Time is set aside every night and if possible every morning to listen to the audio prescribed.

The purpose of agreement in therapy

By entering into this sacred agreement with your therapist you are giving your subconscious the clear message that you have heard its call and are now willing and ready to dig up what you buried all those years ago and as an adult resolve what you were unable to do then. You accept that there is an emotional root cause to your problem and once you have addressed it at the subconscious your symptoms will vanish as there will be no longer any need for your subconscious to keep drawing your attention to what you will have dealt with.

Breaking your agreement

Breaking any of the clauses of our agreement is an indication of subconscious resistance that as such would be seen as an issue pertaining to your problem to be discussed in therapy. Everything that comes up in therapy even the urge to quit therapy before resolving your problem is seen as an opportunity and as such can be used to your advantage if brought up in session.

Hypnotherapy to Treat Sleeping Disorders

The most common problems we treat

As Hypnotherapists in Private Practice here at Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic in Peel, Isle of Man my wife Mary and I have treated many people who have come to us for a very wide variety of problems. Anxiety, Depression and Insomnia being by far the most common conditions we have been asked to treat.

Last port of call

We found that very often the three conditions are linked in that someone who finds it difficult to sleep at night often exhibits symptoms of anxiety and/or depression. Most people who come to us have tried everything and we are usually their last hope. We see this as a positive because by the time they arrive to us they have tried everything that focusses on the symptoms so when we suggest that it is time to treat the person they are more open to this.

Smoke alarm

We often use the analogy of people wanting to turn off a smoke alarm because they can’t bear the noise and we suggest that just turning off the alarm does not put out the fire. We explain that every symptom has an emotional root cause in the subconscious. If a person can’t sleep then there must a very good reason but the problem is that the reason is not available to the conscious mind. We guide people to access the subconscious to bring the underlying root cause of their problem to their conscious awareness so that they can then address the problem and in effect put out the fire. Once the fire is out the alarm goes off.

The cause of each person’s condition is unique

Every person who suffers from insomnia will unearth a different root cause for the condition. In all the years I have treated people suffering from insomnia no two have ever shared the same subconscious reason for the condition. Once the cause is discovered there is usually an emotional release called an abreaction. Someone inexperienced in dealing with abreactions could panic when it happens and this can cause further complications. That is why it is very important to seek the help of an experienced and  fully qualified therapist when choosing to embark on this course of therapy.

Hypnotherapy to Treat Tinnitus

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is a condition which is characterised by the sensation of a sound in the ear or head which is not produced by external noises.  The type of sound and volume of this perceived sound varies from person to person.  The usual sounds are a high pitched whistle, a buzzing, ringing of bells; in fact there are many other sounds which can be bothersome.  The sound may be intermittent or continuous and the volume varies from a background irritation to very loud which often affects a person’s ability to work or enjoy life.

What are the causes of Tinnitus?

The cause of tinnitus has been associated with age related hearing loss, with exposure to loud noises at work, high blood pressure, anaemia or head injury.

One should always arrange to see a General Practitioner to ascertain that there is no serious physical underlying cause for the condition.  If the Tinnitus is not physically related, then there is an emotional root cause which needs to be addressed at the subconscious level.

What is the role of Hypnosis in the treatment of Tinnitus?

Hypnosis is not a cure for Tinnitus caused by physical damage or when it is age related; however, studies have proven that hypnotherapy has about a 70% success rate of reducing tinnitus noise.  Tinnitus is always made worse by stress and since tinnitus causes stress the condition is self propagating!  Hypnotherapy is extremely beneficial to aid relaxation and wellbeing.  A positive approach to Tinnitus can make the condition less intrusive, and improve the quality of life of the sufferer.

Like the management of pain the management of Tinnitus can result in the symptoms of Tinnitus being reduced significantly. This is done by teaching the mind to focus elsewhere. By concentrating on other more pleasant things you are reducing the attention given to the noise in your head. It is a skill and like any other skill we get better at the more we practice it.

If the cause of Tinnitus is emotional, a course of Analytical Hypnotherapy is recommended to find the cause and alleviate the symptom … the noise. Following are links to Articles Xavier and I have written about Analytical Hypnotherapy or also known as Hypno-Psychotherapy:

Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic Approach to the Treatment of Psychosomatic Illness

At Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic we teach self-hypnosis and visualisation techniques to help each client to help themselves.  Hypnotherapy is no quick fix, time is needed to change the perceptions of the client and to teach the tools which are going to allow each client to manage their own well being. Each client who comes to us is an individual and we treat each as such.  We ascertain which course of therapy best suits the client, Suggestion Therapy or Analytical Hypnotherapy.  Our therapy is personalised so the first session always takes about two hours to find out exactly what the client truly wants.  Once that is agreed upon we both then can take the route together, solution focused, which is our primary aim.

Treating Phobias at Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic

What is a Phobia?

A phobia is an irrational fear of something which, in fact, poses very little danger to the sufferer.  He or she knows that this fear is illogical but is unable to control the panic and anxiety which when confronted with the phobia is completely overwhelming.  The panic and terror is automatic and often prevents people from doing ordinary things they would love to do.The most common phobias are:

• Fear of spiders

• Fear of flying

• Fear of needles

• Fear of  dogs

• Fear of public speaking

• Fear of illness

• Fear of enclosed spaces

• Fear of open spaces

• Fear of heights

This is just a brief list of the most common cases we have treated at Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic but in reality people could and do have phobias about anything.

What is the difference between a normal fear and a phobia?

Fear is a useful tool to have because it protects us from/in dangerous situations.  It is an adaptive human response and is there for protective purposes … bring our “fight-or-flight” response into play when needed.  For example, it is normal to feel fear if facing a wild tiger, but should the same fear be experienced when facing a domestic cat? For a person suffering from a cat phobia the same rush of anxiety and fear would catapult them into an immediate state of panic which to a cat lover seems totally irrational or bizarre.

Common Phobia signs and symptoms:

• Palpitations and pounding of heart and increased heart beat

• Dizziness, feeling faint

• Trembling body

• Sweating

• Nausea

• Fear of losing control

• Throat closing up

• Loud noises in ears

Some people suffer from a couple of these symptoms and others suffer them all and more!

How can Hypnotherapy help with phobias?

Most clients who visit our clinic have phobias which can be successfully treated with three sessions of Suggestion Therapy.

The First Session is Information Gathering, during this session I ask many questions about the client’s background, the history of the phobia and the changes the client wishes to make in his/her life.  The client learns Self-hypnosis during this 2 hour session and this starts the client on the road to freedom!

The Second Session is a Suggestion Therapy Session during which the client is guided into a state of hypnosis and positive life changing suggestions are given.  The hypnotic state, which is simply a state of relaxation during which the analytical mind is relaxed and the subconscious mind comes to the fore, allows the client to readily accept the positive suggestions for change which s/he has already stated in the first session.  This therapy is about empowerment … allowing the client take responsibility for their own life, thoughts feelings and behaviour.

From the information I gather in the first session I make a personalised CD for each client.  This CD is of benefit only to the person it has been made for because it contains positive suggestions relating to what the client specifically stated in session one.  This CD is given to the client at the end of the second session and I request that the client take responsibility for playing this every night for a minimum of 90 nights.

The Third Session may contain any or some of the following techniques:  Fast  Phobia Cure, Pin Point Analysis, Traumatic Incident Reduction, The Swish Technique and or Healing the Inner Child.  This session depends of the individual client and what they present in session.

A phobia is by its very nature debilitating and may limit a person hugely, restricting job promotion, travel, social life and many other aspects of life.  Sometimes there is an emotional root cause that needs to be looked at before the phobia is cured.  If this is the case then Analytical Hypnotherapy is the route we would promote.  An example of this may be Tokophobia , (to mention just one )… which is a fear of pregnancy and/or giving birth.  If there is an emotional root cause it would be like putting a plaster on an infected wound without cleaning it to do Suggestion Therapy alone.  Analytical Therapy requires a minimum of 12 sessions, for more information please look at our webpage explaining the difference between both therapies.

Hypnotherapy lends itself very well to the treatment of phobias in people of all ages.  All it takes is the client choosing to embrace positive changes in his or her life and trusting that all will go well.

Hypno-Psychotherapy for the Treatment of Depression

Analytical Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis with Psychotherapy is a Remedy for Healing

Because so may people associate hypnosis with entertainment and stage hypnosis some never realise the power of hypnosis for healing. Hypnosis continues to be used to great effect in the treatment of conditions created by the mind such as depression, panic attacks, sleeping problems, sexual difficulties, irritable bowel, overweight, lack of confidence, fears, phobias, post traumatic stress, and smoking.

People don’t deliberately set out to develop depression, panic attacks or sleeping problems. Nobodyconsciously sets out to create a weight problem or become addicted to tobacco. However these problems exist in the world and people who have these conditions feel embarrassed and even judged for having them.

People suffering from the conditions I have listed above are being controlled by programs they have stored in their subconscious. Though they consciously want to be well their subconscious does not allow it. When there is conflict between the conscious and subconscious the subconscious always wins.

People suffering from a condition they have no control over can feel helpless, ashamed and weak. Many turn to medication to alleviate the symptoms of their condition and some even can spend years taking prescribed medication to keep some handle on the symptoms. Only dealing with the symptoms is like turning off the smoke alarm in a house but not looking for the fire.

Analytical Hypnotherapy is a method of addressing the root cause of  conditions like depression, panic attack, sleeping problems, sexual difficulties, irritable bowel, overweight, lack of confidence, fears, phobias, post traumatic stress, and smoking. Analytical hypnotherapy uses hypnosis to still the conscious analytical  mind to access the subconscious and psychotherapy to help the sufferer understand the underlying root cause and release the repressed associated emotion. This is a liberating experience for anyone experiencing the treatment and ultimately restores balance and health because the power of choice is restored. While suffering from depression or smoking cigarettes people feel like slaves to their conditions. They have been robbed of the power to choose and as a consequence are unable to stick by decisions they make consciously.  Analytical Hypnotherapy restores their power of choice and gives them back their freedom. The result is a balanced life again.

Analytical Hypnotherapy is a process or  journey within to understand who you are and why you feel the way you do. The thoughts we dwell upon affect our feelings. If you keep thinking sad thoughts you will eventually feel sad and by the same token if you keep thinking happy thoughts you will eventually feel happy. This all sounds very simple but it isn’t if you  feel you don’t have the power to choose your thoughts or if you don’t even know that you have the power to choose what to think. People who are in a state of depression are constantly dwelling on thoughts that pull their feelings down. They feel down all of the time and the depressed feeling causes them to think even more depressing thoughts which creates a cycle that can only be broken when they reclaim their power of choice.

We tend to appreciate what we have when we lose it so a person in the grip of depression realises this only too well. Free will is the freedom to choose whatever you want to think but in a state of depression you are a prisoner of your feelings and you do not have the freedom to choose your thoughts. For people  to regain their freedom or free will they must let go of the feelings they keep captive in their hearts. During Analytical Hypnotherapy it is inevitable that emotion be released and this can be in the form of tears,  laughter or a sigh. Everyone is different and each person releases emotion in their own way during therapy. The feeling they report is always positive and liberating.

Once a person uncovers the underlying emotional root cause of the condition, understands it and releases the it they can’t imagine how they could ever have been other than balanced and happy. It is like they had experienced a bad dream that feels like a distant memory.I am sometimes asked at the beginning of therapy by a client if the condition will come back. I always answer if they were to burn a match can they ever get it back? Analytical Hypnotherapy  is a natural, ethical approach to healing conditions created by the mind and our success rate reflects that this holistic approach though it may take longer works and is lasting.

This is a practical and very comprehensive guide for the practitioner of hypnoanalysis. The author is probably the most influential practitioner and teacher in the history of modern hypnotherapy. The book is useful for people undergoing hypnotherapy because it gives a good understanding of what hypnosis is and what they can expect in therapy. This is the best book, in our opinion,  on the subject of  hypnotherapy.
