Why Suffering?

The power of belief

Our expectations are determined by what we believe. What we believe about life and the world around us influences what we expect to happen to us and others. It is our belief systems that determine how we perceive people. It is our belief systems that determine how we perceive situations and experiences. At a subconscious level we learn how to react to people and situations and we make decisions regarding our behaviour and condition in order to fit our belief systems. The adjustments made at the subconscious level can result in symptoms we call allergies, disease or illness and behaviours we call compulsive, addictive or destructive. This all happens below our consciousness so we are unaware of these developments until we start to experience the results of these decisions taken at the subconscious level. At the subconscious level symptoms and behaviour patterns are chosen with our best interests and highest good in mind but these very decisions may well be responsible for feelings of unhappiness and hopelessness we might feel right now.

Karmic constraints

The decisions made at the subconscious level are made within the constraints of the belief systems we cling to and in order to affect change then it is necessary for us to loosen those constraints and open ourselves to seeing life and the world from a wider variety of perspectives. The degree of our happiness is governed largely by our capacity to let go of any belief that results in causing us pain or unhappiness. This is, however, more easily said than done because the beliefs that we hold are developed over many lifetimes.

Pain and suffering have a purpose

Unhappiness and pain have a purpose in that without them we would never question our perceptions. Pain and unhappiness are merely reminders for us not to get too comfortable with our perceptions because they are not real. Our purpose here is to discover the truth of who we really are through the veil of the belief systems we use to define ourselves.

Many are unwilling to heed the reminders and remain slaves to their beliefs imagining that the pain and unhappiness they experience are outside their control. It is the willingness to change and embrace the adventure of life, the way a child experiences things for the first time, without any preconceived ideas, criticisms or judgments.  All the while trusting in that higher consciousness, within each of us, for our guidance and inner security …  then we start to ensure our peace, happiness and fulfillment.

Hypno-Psychotherapy to Treat Addiction

Addicted to Junk Food

A young man recently asked me how I help people overcome addictions.  When I asked why he explained that he thought he was addicted to junk food.  He is very fit and an athletic looking young man but the more he trained the more he indulged in food that sabotaged his progress.

The Power of Mindset

I explained that rather than fuel a negative belief about himself I thought that he might consider his behaviour from a different perspective.  We chatted for a while and eventually I succeeded in explaining to him the power our thoughts have on the ‘reality’ we each personally experience.

Why is it that one man can eat whatever and as much of any kind of food and never put on extra weight and another man has only to look at food to put on the pounds?

The answer lies in the mindset of each man. One man believes, at the subconscious level, that he cannot put on weight regardless of what he eats and he is destined to be thin.  The other believes he is destined to be fat.  It is the belief that creates each man’s reality.

Core Beliefs

Regardless of what he want and how hard we pray if our core beliefs are not in line with our desire then our subconscious beliefs about ourselves and the world will always win out over what we consciously desire.

Going on diets and praying for a thin body is of no benefit if the mind clings to thoughts that negate all your efforts.

Simply focussing on the behaviour of overeating is an effective way of solving the problem.  It is not until the core belief is addressed that any change can occur.  The thoughts we think give a clue to the core beliefs we hold and the words we speak betray these thoughts.

The conversation made the young man think more deeply about why he continued to eat junk food though he claims he wanted to ‘get ripped’. The seed has been planted for him to do some introspection and I am confident that when he is ready he will address the core beliefs that prevent him from achieving his goals.

Use Hypnotherapy to believe what you want … if you dare!

A common belief held by many is that we are soul or spirit inside a body and when the body dies our soul leaves the body and returns to God.

Some people even speak of experience they have had in which they left their body for a period of time while they were still alive. These experiences are called Out of Body Experiences or Astral Projection.

Some people describe experiences they have had outside their body when they were deemed clinically dead for a brief period.  These experiences are called Near Death Experiences.

One thing that can be said about all of these experiences is that like all our experiences we cannot help but interpret them and give them meaning based on our collective past experiences.  The meaning, however, is made up in the mind like all the beliefs we hold and as such have little bearing on truth.

The belief that we are actually outside our body and only believe we inhabit our body is as valid a belief as any a person can hold.  But this belief though gaining more support is still only held by a few.

We are free to believe whatever we want but unless we believe this to be true we remain in a kind of belief prison of our own making.  Few fully realise the power they hold to change whatever they want in their lives by choosing what to believe.

Someone reading this might dismiss such a notion citing some logical argument to justify remaining a captive of their old beliefs but that too, is a choice.

“You can bring horse to water but you can’t make him drink”, is a saying my Grandfather taught me and which very aptly fits the human condition.  Regardless of how much pain and suffering we experience few will allow themselves to be open to change their mind about how they view themselves and the world.  Few fail to realise that their pain and suffering is as a result of the beliefs they cling to and to suggest otherwise is seen as insane.  “Who is the insane one”, I ask?

Hypnotherapy is a very effective way of reclaiming the power to choose what to believe. It is a key to free you from a mindset that sabotages your personal development. It is safe and because it is without any of the negative side effects of medication more and more General Practitioners are recommending Hypnotherapy as an effective alternative.

The Mind Commands and the Body Obeys

Following is story from the book The Power of the Subconscious Mind by Dr Joseph Murphy which clearly illustrates how, by harnessing the power of the subconscious mind, we can achieve great things:

Once Enrico Caruso, the great operatic tenor, was struck with stage fright. Spasms caused by intense fear constricted the muscles of his throat. His vocal chords felt paralysed, useless. He stood back- stage, already in costume, while perspiration poured down his face. In just moments he was supposed to go out on stage and sing before an eager audience of thousands.

Trembling, he said, “ I can’t sing. They will all laugh at me. My career is finished.”

He turned to go back to his dressing room. Then suddenly he stopped and shouted. “The Little Me is trying to strangle the Big Me within!”

He turned toward the stage again and stood taller. “ Get out of here,” he commanded, addressing the Little Me. “ The Big Me wants to sing through me.”

By the Big Me, Caruso meant the limitless power and wisdom of his subconscious mind. He began to shout, “Get out, get out, the Big Me is going to sing!”

His subconscious mind responded by releasing the vital forces within him. When the call came, he walked out on stage and sang gloriously and majestically. The audience was enthralled.

Caruso understood the two levels of mind – the conscious or rational, and the subconscious or irrational level. Your subconscious mind is reactive. It responds to the nature of your thoughts. When your conscious mind (Caruso’s Little Me) is full of fear, worry and anxiety, the negative emotions these create in your subconscious mind (the Big Me) are released. They flood the conscious mind with a sense of panic, foreboding, and despair. When this happens to you, you can follow the example of the great Caruso. You can speak affirmatively and with a deep sense of authority to the irrational emotions generated in the deeper mind. You can say, “Be still. Be quiet. I am in control. You must obey me. You are subject to my command. You cannot intrude where you don’t belong.”

You will be fascinated to see what happens when you speak authoritatively and with conviction to the irrational movement of your deeper self. Your mind will be flooded with harmony and with peace. The subconscious is subject to the conscious mind. That is why it is called subconscious or subjective.

Here at their private practice, Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic,  in Peel, Isle of Man  Xavier and Mary Nathan teach people how to harness the power of their subconscious minds to achieve their goals.

Hypnosis to Correct Perception

Perceptions are Deceiving

The biggest problem facing us today is our incorrect perception of ourselves, of others and the world at large.

There is nothing innately wrong with perception because there is actually nothing else we can do given that in order to interact with each other and the world we can only perceive what we observe. The reason for this is that we are dependent on interpreting the information that we receive from our five senses.

Making it up in our Heads

The information we receive from the external world, like light reflected from an object, is converted into electrical impulses which are sent to the brain where they are decoded and an image is created of the object. This all happens in an instant so we imagine that the image we see is the object we are observing outside of us. In fact the image we see and which we attach meaning to is in our own heads.

We automatically assign meaning to things we see in our heads and we pass judgement on people, places, experiences and things normally based on our past experiences with what we observe. Judging and criticising is what we spend most of our waking day doing and it is how we preserve our belief system, self concept and what we believe reality to be.

The Price of Wrong Perception

Most people do not question this state of affairs and are content to accept this but there is a price to pay for such an attitude. Perceiving is not the same as knowing the truth and as long as we hold fast to the notion that our perceptions are reality then we are bound to encounter problems.

Most of the problems we encounter, by believing our illusions to be true, are pain, suffering and disease. It is our reluctance to look past or through the veil of illusion that covers our emotional and spiritual eyes and let go of our wrong perceptions that we invite the pain that we experience.

Stage Hypnosis fuels wrong perception of Hypnosis

In our work as a Clinical Hypno-Psychotherapists my wife Mary and I deal with people who come to us initially to ask us to take away their pain. Most of them are completely oblivious to the idea that it is in fact their erroneous belief system that is causing the problem and it only when they choose to change their minds that any progress can be made.

Most come under the illusion that we are some kind of magicians that will whisk away their problems while they are “under”!

This is not their fault however because most of them have formed their preconceived ideas about Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy based on stage shows by entertainers who wish to give the impression that they are controlling the people on stage. This in fact could not be further from the truth. Nobody controls you when you are in hypnosis. In fact you are more in control of your self in hypnosis than at any other time in your life primarily because in hypnosis you are free to consider  ideas that you would normally never entertain.

Hypnosis to Facilitate Change

During your normal waking day you judge whatever you hear and see based on what you believe to be reality. So if your reality is that you are suffering from a serious illness then you are not going to accept any ideas that suggest anything that goes against this belief in your illness. As long as your belief system protects your illness there will be no change. Doesn’t it make sense therefore that in order to address the illness you have to suspend your judgement in order to entertain an alternative belief  about your health?

Hypnosis enables you to suspend your judgement to the degree that you can entertain alternative perceptions some of which may ideally even contradict the notion of your illness. By learning how to hypnotise yourself you are taking responsibility for how you decide to perceive reality and you are free to choose how you wish to perceive your problem.

“ Life has no remote. Get up and change it yourself.” was a message shared by a friend  on FaceBook and  though I like the message it is easier said than done. Unless people are equipped with the tools and resources to change, they find it difficult to do so. I am going further with this article and proposing how each person can equip themselves with the necessary tools to affect the change they desire.  Learning the art of  Self-Hypnosis is a way to equip ourselves with the necessary resource to at least entertain the idea of change.

Learning Self-Hypnosis

Mary and I both run our own Private Hypno-Psychotherapy Clinic here in Peel, Isle of Man and before we begin any therapy with anyone who seeks our help we first require them to purchase and download from our website an audio we have have developed that teaches them how to hypnotise themselves. The audio costs £29.99 one is with my voice and the other with Mary’s depending on whether the person prefers to be treated by a male or female therapist. We ask them to put the audio on their iPod or MP3 player and play it at least once a day for a week to ten days before starting therapy. When they come to us to start treatment they are already in charge of their own recovery and we are facilitators in the psychotherapeutic process that effectively leads them to correct their self concept.
