The power of the subconscious is beyond measure. Your subconscious controls your heart beat, the circulation of your blood, your digestive system, the growth of your hair and nails and the repairs to your body. Every time you cut yourself your subconscious mind immediately starts the clotting process, the knitting of tissue and the healing of your skin. Every time you catch a virus your subconscious starts the attack to fight off these unwanted bugs and you recover. Your subconscious mind never sleeps; it is always alert to ensure it does the best for you.
During the 1840s a Scottish surgeon, Dr James Esdaille, was practicing medicine in Bengal. This was before anaesthesia was used, but Dr Esdaille performed hundreds of major surgical operations, including amputations, removal of cancerous growths and all the usual ordinary procedures under mental anaesthesia. That is to say … under hypnosis. These patients said they felt no pain and unlike so many operations performed else throughout the world at that time, none of Dr Esdaille’s patients died. Over one and a half centuries ago this man used the power of the subconscious mind to successfully treat his patients!
Can we heal ourselves?
Worry, fear, depression, anxiety all upset the normal functions of the heart, lungs, stomach and the digestive system. The American philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Man is what he thinks all day long.” If you are weighed down with worries, fear or anxiety your thoughts will reflect this. In fact, your thoughts will feed all of the above and the more you dwell on these negative thoughts the worse you feel physically.
I once read a story about a Native American Indian who was sitting at the camp fire with his grandson one night. He was explaining to the boy that inside all of us there are two wolves. One wolf is good, the wolf of kindness, confidence, generosity, love, tolerance etc. The other wolf is bad, the wolf of fear, greed, self loathing, lack of confidence etc. These two wolves are always battling inside of us. The little pondered on this for a few moments and then asked his grandfather “Which wolf wins?” The Grandfather replied, “The one you feed!”
We can heal ourselves by giving positive life healing suggestions to our subconscious minds; we can exchange the negative thoughts for positive thoughts. We all have an active mind and a reactive body and when we “feed the wolf” within with positive thoughts we experience wellness and health.
The Healing Power of Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy can help you to reach your subconscious mind and make the positive changes you want to make. Through the power of hypnosis you can learn to stop that monkey mind which automatically focuses on negative thoughts and feelings and instead focus on success, confidence, peace of mind and relaxation of body thus enabling you to be the person you truly are. Living life to the full with harmony and equilibrium.
Following is story from the book The Power of the Subconscious Mind by Dr Joseph Murphy which clearly illustrates how, by harnessing the power of the subconscious mind, we can achieve great things:
Once Enrico Caruso, the great operatic tenor, was struck with stage fright. Spasms caused by intense fear constricted the muscles of his throat. His vocal chords felt paralysed, useless. He stood back- stage, already in costume, while perspiration poured down his face. In just moments he was supposed to go out on stage and sing before an eager audience of thousands.
Trembling, he said, “ I can’t sing. They will all laugh at me. My career is finished.”
He turned to go back to his dressing room. Then suddenly he stopped and shouted. “The Little Me is trying to strangle the Big Me within!”
He turned toward the stage again and stood taller. “ Get out of here,” he commanded, addressing the Little Me. “ The Big Me wants to sing through me.”
By the Big Me, Caruso meant the limitless power and wisdom of his subconscious mind. He began to shout, “Get out, get out, the Big Me is going to sing!”
His subconscious mind responded by releasing the vital forces within him. When the call came, he walked out on stage and sang gloriously and majestically. The audience was enthralled.
Caruso understood the two levels of mind – the conscious or rational, and the subconscious or irrational level. Your subconscious mind is reactive. It responds to the nature of your thoughts. When your conscious mind (Caruso’s Little Me) is full of fear, worry and anxiety, the negative emotions these create in your subconscious mind (the Big Me) are released. They flood the conscious mind with a sense of panic, foreboding, and despair. When this happens to you, you can follow the example of the great Caruso. You can speak affirmatively and with a deep sense of authority to the irrational emotions generated in the deeper mind. You can say, “Be still. Be quiet. I am in control. You must obey me. You are subject to my command. You cannot intrude where you don’t belong.”
You will be fascinated to see what happens when you speak authoritatively and with conviction to the irrational movement of your deeper self. Your mind will be flooded with harmony and with peace. The subconscious is subject to the conscious mind. That is why it is called subconscious or subjective.
Here at their private practice, Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic, in Peel, Isle of Man Xavier and Mary Nathan teach people how to harness the power of their subconscious minds to achieve their goals.

The Power by Rhonda Byrne
This is a life changing book that explains the power of love. Each one of us has the choice to think what we want but we seldom exercise this choice. We spend most of the day on auto pilot reacting in the same way to people and events that occur oblivious to the fact that we are creating our feelings and our circumstances. Our thoughts affect how we feel and when we feel bad we tend to think more bad thoughts and create even more bad feeling and this situation continues until we think good thoughts to lift our mood. Our feelings attract into our lives people and circumstances that reflect how we feel and that is why it is in our interests to exercise the power of choice to create happiness and always be connected to universal power of love.

Awareness by Anthony deMello
This best-selling book by one of the most gifted spiritual guides of the twentieth century is now established as a modern spiritual classic. Its anecdotes, stories, practical guidelines and exercises use humour, compassion and insight to the importance of awareness in truly understanding ourselves and the world we live in. The book addresses issues that are relevant to everyone today and these issues include change, happiness, suffering, loss and direction is also given on coping with anger and fear.
Most people now accept that we are much more than physical beings. We have a conscious and a subconscious mind. We have an intellect and we also have emotions.
We use language to communicate our conscious ideas and thoughts to ourselves and to each other but we use a far more complex system to communicate our feelings.
It is not what someone says but what the person feels that is communicated. Eloquent words can never truly mask feelings that are not in harmony with the spoken word. You know when someone is lying to you. You can hear their words but your gut is telling you something different.
Most of what we do in our normal waking lives is subconsciously motivated. A smoker will often find himself smoking and not remember lighting his cigarette. A person driving a car arrives at the destination but doesn’t remember the journey. A person biting her nails will suddenly suddenly realise she is doing so but not remember lifting her hand to her mouth for the purpose of biting her nails.
When we dream we are like scuba divers in the ocean of our subconscious. When we awake in the morning we bring back photographs of our feelings. Each image is a symbol representing a feeling or complex of emotions. Our dreams are an indication of our subconscious communication and our dream images are a way for us to learn the language of our subconscious. Just as we learned how to consciously communicate through language we can learn the language of the subconscious by connecting our dream symbols with the images we bring back with us. Each symbol is personal so that is why it does not make a lot of sense for anyone else to interpret our dreams for us. Our dream symbols are unique so what symbolizes something for you may not symbolize the same thing for someone else. It is for this reason that consulting a dream book that tells you the meaning of each symbol you bring back from your dream world is a complete waste of time. There are as many meanings as there are people in the world. You are unique and only you can decipher your own symbols. A therapist can help you learn the language of your dreams but it is not any therapist’s place to interpret your dreams for you.
Having said this, however, there are symbols that are recognised by the collective unconscious. One such symbol is the figure 8. The figure 8 is naturally recognised by each person’s subconscious and is used very effectively to communicate with the subconscious one’s conscious desire to sever unhealthy attachments to people, and addictions. It is no good shouting at the subconscious and demanding it stops you from over eating, smoking, indulging in destructive behaviours. It is no good begging your subconscious to feel good about yourself or to stop seeing your father as cruel and insensitive. Your subconscious does not understand English or any other language you speak. You must learn the language of the subconscious to communicate your wishes. Your subconscious wants to give you whatever you want even if it is bad for you. It simply answers all your requests regardless. The problem is you don’t even know that you are continuously requesting and receiving everything you ask for. There is communication between what you consciously dwell upon and how these thoughts create feelings. It is the intensity of the emotions created by the thoughts you most frequently dwell upon that forms the communication with your subconscious. You use your thoughts and feelings to order what you want in your life but you don’t know you are doing this.
The English psychotherapist, Phyllis Krystal developed a method of communicating with the subconscious for the purpose of freeing the individual from reliance on and attachment to outer symbols of control and/or security. The method involves being guided by our own inner source of wisdom which is available to everyone. Phyllis Krystal has written many books in which she describes her journey in developing the techniques that people all over the world have used with great success. She has given numerous seminars all over Europe showing people how to achieve the freedom they seek. In her book Cutting the Ties that Bind she explains how to use the symbol of the figure 8 to sever our negative attachments to people and anything else that hijacks our personal power and prevents our development as human beings.
In my private practice as a Hypnotherapist & Psychotherapist I use the techniques developed by Phyllis Krystal with most of the people who seek my help and have found them invaluable. Using the methods developed by Phyllis Krystal both personally and in my capacity as a therapist has greatly enhanced my life and my effectiveness as a healer of minds.
I have listed all the books written by Phyllis Krystal at the bottom of this article and highly recommend each one for your own personal journey to free yourself from all that holds you back in your life and to truly express who you really are.

James Allen (1864 to 1912) was a humble man of humble origins who said what he thought and did what he said. He discovered a way to achieve happiness consistently and in all circumstances as long as certain laws of the universe were adhered to. The laws of the universe I refer to are the same laws described by all the saints, mystics and prophets down though the ages. They are the same laws decribed in the Christian Bible, the Koran of Islam, The Vedas of the Hindus and in all the sacred ancient texts. James Allen didn’t discover anything new he just became aware of how to use what was already available to each one of us.
His education was interrupted at the age of fifteen when he was forced to leave school to support his family after his father was killed. He worked hard and made the best of what life had given him. After uncovering the laws that governed reality he devoted his life to applying these laws and teaching people how to use them. He wrote nineteen books in all and though he did not receive fame or fortune in his own lifetime his books have inspired millions since his death.
I learned of James Allen when my father gave me the book “As A Man
Thinketh” as I set out on my own life’s journey as a young man. I didn’t fully understand the ideas explained in the book at first. It has taken me many years and many readings to come to the understanding I have today of what James Allen wanted to teach the world. I would like to share with you this understanding which I practice in my own life. No doubt I will continue to refine this understanding as the years progress and I invite you to join me in exploring how our thoughts create and are constantly altering our reality.
Thought is an energy. Like electricity or magnetism you can’t see it but you know it exists because of its effects. Though electricity isn’t completely understood we use it and have become dependent on it for some of our basic needs like heat and light. Thought too can be harnessed by the mind for the effects it produces. Scientists know how to harness electricity to create heat and light but few ever learn how to harness the power of thought to create health, wealth and happiness. We are all aware of the desire for every human being to be healthy, wealthy and happy but there is no subject in the school curriculum that teaches us how to achieve these things. Can any of you remember your very first thought? Do you even remember the first thought you have on waking? Yet we spend most of our lives immersed in thought. The only times we are not thinking are times when we are driving and arrive at our destination unable to remember the journey, or when we are dozing or sleeping. Are you thinking when you are watching TV or a movie or is your mind doing something else? Surely you must remember a time during a boring lesson or meeting when you were jolted back to the present when someone called your name? Have you ever had the experience of being stuck on the same page in a book because every time you read the paragraph you can’t remember what you read?
What if thought is an energy at our disposal? What if it could be moulded to create anything we wanted in our lives but this came with a condition? In order to create something we had to deliberately choose to make it a habit to dwell on thoughts about the thing we wanted. What if it was as simple as dwelling upon a thought form in order to create what we wanted? How then could a child who thinks he is stupid ever be clever? How then could a man be poor if he dwells upon thoughts of how to create wealth? How could a woman be loved if she harbours thoughts of how unlovable she is? Thoughts are like radio waves all around us and we tune into certain frequencies depending on how we feel. The happier we feel the higher the thought forms we attract and so we simply feed ourselves more happiness. The more miserable we feel the more we attract thoughts of misery and by feeding our minds with more of the same we feel worse. It is our choice of thought initially that starts the cycle so wouldn’t it make sense to choose the thoughts to dwell upon in order to create the feelings we desire? The chair you are sitting on started off as a thought in someones head. That person must have spoken about the idea and eventually enough energy was invested in the idea to give it momentum and it is now physically manifested under you. It is not magic, it is a process and once you understand the process you can use it to create not just the feelings you desire but even the material things you want.
It is not enough to consciously think about something in order to create it. If it was that simple then everybody would be doing it and the world would be Paradise. Effort is required and the effort involved is what stands in the way of every human being receiving everything they desire. It takes effort to change the habits and patterns of lifetimes. It takes effort to change and even though you might find yourself slipping back into your old negative thoughts you have free will and you can choose whatever you want to think about. It doesn’t matter whether or not you believe it will work just choose your thoughts and investigate the possibility with an open mind. what do you have to lose? If you are poor and struggling financially choose to imagine what it would feel like to be rich. Unless you replace your thoughts of poverty with thoughts of wealth how else are you going to change your reality? Well, you could entertain the idea that you could become rich and start imagining all the ways that this could happen. You could start reading about the lives of people who rose out of the ashes to become rich and famous. You could use your powerful imagination to shift your limiting beliefs and you could change your internal dialogue to hear yourself saying…”Everyday in every way I am becoming happier and happier, I am starting to love and accept myself more and more with each passing day.” Eventually the walls of Jericho did fall and so too the walls of your negative world will crumble and you will rebuild for yourself a stronger brighter, healthier, wealthier, world. Give it a go…what have you got to lose! Thank you Dad, and thank you James Allen.
