There are two parts to your mind…the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. The conscious mind is the mind you use when you are awake and engaged in your daily life, you use it to learn anything new, to analyse, evaluate and judge. When you sleep at night you give your conscious mind a well earned rest from all the thousands of thoughts that come in and out throughout the day.
The subconscious mind is that part of you that stores everything that ever happened to you, it also allows your hair to grow and your heart to beat without you even having to think about these things consciously.
If you have learned bad habits then they, too, have been stored in the subconscious mind and are being activated automatically. Anything stored in your subconscious mind in this way is out of your conscious control. You automatically react in certain ways in certain circumstances and are unable to behave in any other way because your subconscious mind is stronger than your conscious mind. This is where hypnosis comes in, by learning how to deliberately achieve the relaxed state of hypnosis you are relaxing the thinking conscious mind and allowing yourself access to your subconscious mind.
Suggestion Therapy is best suited helping clients to change habits of a life time, to relieve stress, to rid themselves of phobias, to Stop Smoking and for any symptoms or conditions which does not have an emotional root cause. As a therapist I help the client to access their subconscious mind by guiding them into hypnosis, a state of relaxation. Once that is achieved then with well constructed positive suggestions the client is enabled to make the changes he/she wishes to make.
By accessing the subconscious mind you are enabled to replace bad habits, change old limiting beliefs and embrace a brighter present and future. What a nice present to give yourself.
All Hypnotherapy for children at our private practice, Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic in the Isle of Man employs Suggestion Therapy.
Suggestion Therapy as Practiced at Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic in Peel, Isle of Man
Suggestion Therapy comprises of three sessions in the majority of cases. The first session is fact finding, clarifying the changes the client wants and I also teach them how to hypnotise themselves. The second session comprises of a relaxation session in hypnosis which will encompass all the positive changes the client has asked for. The client is given a personalised CD in this second session to take home which I make after the first session. The personalised CD has a relaxation introduction which is then followed by the positive suggestions to enhance the work done in session. This must be listened to every night for a minimum of 90 days. The third session is dependent on what the client reports on the changes during the previous week or any issues that have arisen. The work carried out in this session builds on the previous sessions so nothing is left to chance. Each client who attends Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic is an individual and as such our therapies are personalised to ensure the best outcome for each client.

For most of us going to sleep at night is a pleasurable experience. We may have worked and played hard during the day and our minds and bodies need to recuperate, re-energise and rest for the following day. Most of us just simply close our eyes and think some pleasant thoughts and drift off into a deep sleep. If you are one of those lucky people well I guess you won’t be reading this … unless of course your partner or family member is not sleeping !
For those who find getting to sleep stressful and who struggle to get to sleep or for those who wake up in the middle of the night facing long lonely hours of tossing and turning in their beds, bedtime is not such a pleasurable experience. As minutes turn to hours the feelings of frustration and exhaustion intensify.
Insomnia robs us of our energy and much needed rejuvenation. It robs us of our joy of life as each sleepless night is followed by an exhausted day!
Insomnia does not have to be part of your existence. Imagine what it would be like to sleep like a baby, a natural blissful sleep.
Get the Rest You Need
At Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic we have helped many people do just that … sleep a natural blissful sleep! There are two types of therapies which we employ and we choose one of these to suit the individual client. For example, if the client has an emotional root cause for the insomnia then we choose Analytical Hypnotherapy. Another name for Analytical Hypnotherapy is Hypno-Psychotherapy. If the problem is simply a habit or if the client is a child then we choose Suggestion Therapy.
Your subconscious mind can help you to change your habits and automatic responses, allowing you to let go of anxieties and fears. Thinking thoughts of NOT sleeping create that very thing … of NOT sleeping. By accessing your subconscious mind through hypnosis you can change those negative thoughts and emotions to do with sleep and allow yourself to get the rest you need!

You have come to me in order to embark on a course in Hypno-Psychotherapy because something is bothering you. This something is what we call your presenting symptoms and you have no conscious control over them. Your symptoms are bothering you to the degree that they are interfering with your life and preventing you from leading a full life.
The role of symptom
The symptom or symptoms you report, is your subconscious way of getting your attention, and it could be any number of things like or nail biting, or over eating, blushing, rage, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, gambling, or M.E. There are as many symptoms as there are people in the world. Important to note is that your symptom is telling you something you need to hear. Like a child crying for your attention, by ignoring your symptom or suppressing it simply results in your symptom being intensified. The symptom you present is the reason you have come to me for help.
There is a subconscious reason for the symptom
There is no point in simply getting rid of the symptoms without understanding the reason or reasons why they are there. Your mind will simply replace the symptoms and go on doing so until you resolve the underlying cause or causes of the symptoms you report.
Anything that you deem is too painful or unacceptable is repressed by your subconscious mind and that is a basic defence mechanism of every human being. Whatever it is you buried in the subconscious you most likely did so as a child. As an adult your subconscious has given you your symptoms as a way of telling you that you are now ready to deal with that buried material that once overwhelmed you as a child.
The symptoms you report are evidence that such repressed material exists in your subconscious mind and are in effect the alarm clock going off in the subconscious for you to wake up to go to work on yourself.
Your conscious mind is a very strict censor and anything entering or leaving it is carefully monitored. It is for this reason you are not in a position to recall, at will, the root cause of the problem you report.
The steps involved in creating the healing therapeutic environment
The first step to resolving the problems you report is to create conditions for the making conscious of what has been repressed. To do this you must first consciously agree to the following conditions which form the basis for your treatment:
To pay for your therapy according to the terms agreed upon.
To give me at least 24 hours notice of cancellation of a session.
To report every thought and feeling which comes to mind during the session.
You report whatever comes to mind without regard for logical order and report them even if you regard them as trivial, impolite or shameful.
You write down the dreams you have and submit them to me at the start of each session.
Any communication between us during the treatment, written or verbal is kept private and confidential.
Time is set aside every night and if possible every morning to listen to the audio prescribed.
The purpose of agreement in therapy
By entering into this sacred agreement with your therapist you are giving your subconscious the clear message that you have heard its call and are now willing and ready to dig up what you buried all those years ago and as an adult resolve what you were unable to do then. You accept that there is an emotional root cause to your problem and once you have addressed it at the subconscious your symptoms will vanish as there will be no longer any need for your subconscious to keep drawing your attention to what you will have dealt with.
Breaking your agreement
Breaking any of the clauses of our agreement is an indication of subconscious resistance that as such would be seen as an issue pertaining to your problem to be discussed in therapy. Everything that comes up in therapy even the urge to quit therapy before resolving your problem is seen as an opportunity and as such can be used to your advantage if brought up in session.
Before starting a course in Hypno-Psychotherapy at Setanta Clinic in Peel, Isle of Man you will be asked to download an audio called Treatment Preparation by either Xavier Nathan or Mary Nathan, depending on who you wish to be treated by. You will be asked to play the audio for at least a week before you start your treatment, during which time you will prepare your mind for the work you will have to do.
If you would like to know more about the work we do please visit our Setanta Clinic Website or call Tel: 842938 to book a no obligation Free Initial Consultation stating whether you would prefer to speak to a male or female therapist.
Down through the years I have worked with many clients who have suffered from a range of problems as a result of having dyslexia or other learning difficulties.
I have helped people overcome:
Low self esteem and confidence
Difficulties with concentration, attention and memory
Phobias related to reading and writing in class
Organisation and time management
Childhood can cause all kinds of challenges, the world is such a big place and everything is so new! On top of that children are forced out of the safety of the home environment at such an early age to go to school it is no wonder so many suffer from anxiety and lack of self confidence. For those children with dyslexia or other learning difficulties, how they perceive the world during their formative school years affect them for the rest of their lives. For most children with dyslexia they are not diagnosed until they are at least seven years but of course many slip through the net completely. What in effect this means is that for the most impressionable years, children learn that they are not as good/as bright/ as clever as other children and this may be impressed on them throughout the whole of their school years. Bullying may also be an issue and needless to say all of this causes low self esteem, lack of confidence and in some cases behavioural problems.
Hypnotherapy can help
Hypnotherapy can help the child or adult to change those beliefs which are stored in the subconscious mind freeing the person to reach their full potential. People with dyslexia respond very well to hypnotherapy because we are dealing with the subconscious mind which is the most creative part of the brain. Most have excellent skills in visualisation which is a highly valued ability in successful hypnotherapy as we address the subconscious mind to change old belief patterns which create such negative self beliefs.
The Gift of Dyslexia
The list of people with dyslexia down through the ages is long and many on it revered! Those who have the gift of dyslexia may have been very different people and may not have achieved so much if they had not had dyslexia. It is time now to stop seeing this condition as a problem but instead a gift to be appreciated. I can, as a Hypnotherapist, show you how to learn to appreciate your gift and the person you truly are.
Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression which occurs at the same time every year. For most people this occurs in the autumn and winter seasons as day light hours are reduced dramatically. If the depression reoccurs repeatedly for at least two years and only occurs at a particular time of year, then you could be suffering from SAD.
Many people suffering from SAD experience all or some of the following symptoms : decreased energy, lack of enthusiasm, decreased or increased appetite, insomnia or hypersomnia, lack of concentration, loss of pleasure in activities you once enjoyed, thoughts of suicide or death, social isolation or anxiety. People affected by SAD often crave carbohydrate foods which make them feel even more sluggish so the vicious cycle continues.
SAD, like any major depression, can be very debilitating and often requires professional treatment to alleviate the symptoms. Hypnotherapy can play an enormous part in reducing the anxiety and symptoms related to this condition. At Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic we use both Analytical Hypnotherapy and Suggestion Therapy to enable our clients to free themselves from this annual cycle of depression. Analytical Hypnotherapy allows the client to get to the emotional root cause of the condition, why you have this in the first place and others do not! Suggestion Therapy is very effective because when you experience something under hypnosis your mind reacts as if this very thing is real. Therefore, you can imagine that you are experiencing daylight, sunshine, warmth from the sun and feel the benefits as if it were a warm sunny Summer’s day.
We have successfully treated many clients here at the Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic in Peel who have suffered from SAD. Those people are now living normal, happy, joyful lives all through the year whatever the season. So don’t just brush off this condition as just the ‘winter blues’ that you have to put up with on a yearly basis. Why not enjoy today and every day to the full!

Out of the many poems written by the great mystic Rumi I have chosen a poem called The Guest House because I feel it reflects the kind of work that we do here at Setanta Clinic in Peel.
We teach people how to learn from with their emotions rather than pushing them away or suppressing them. We show people how to release themselves from pain and suffering by addressing their repressed emotions and freeing themselves of the limitations that prevent them from leading a more fulfilling life.
Illness as a Result of Suppressing our Emotions
By suppressing their emotions and denying their expression we create conflict within which then manifests as physical illness without. It is learning how to acknowledge and appropriately express our emotions that we create balance within and open ourselves to choices that we would otherwise deny ourselves.
Emotions are not to be feared but listened to as their messages are of special importance in our journey through life. The Guest House is a poem by the great Persian mystic and Sufi, Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rumi, in which he invites us to embrace our own our emotions. He describes them as teachers to be welcomed into the house of mind as they have come to guide us home to the truth.
Hypno-Psychotherapy as Practised at Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic in the Isle of Man
Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic is the private practice of Xavier and Mary Nathan here in Peel, Isle of Man. The therapy provided by Xavier and Mary is a talking therapy, Hypno-Psychotherapy, that involves the using Hypnosis to relax the conscious mind in order to access the subconscious and uncover the repressed emotions and Psychotherapy to bring the underlying emotional root cause to conscious awareness so they can be understood and released. It is in this sense that Xavier and Mary not only employ the latest therapeutic techniques but also continue to adhere to the wisdom handed down through the centuries which are true and as effective today as they were thousands of years ago.
The Guest House – By Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rumi
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honourably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
Hypno-Psychotherapy explained by Xavier and Mary Nathan
A young man recently asked me how I help people overcome addictions. When I asked why he explained that he thought he was addicted to junk food. He is very fit and an athletic looking young man but the more he trained the more he indulged in food that sabotaged his progress.
The Power of Mindset
I explained that rather than fuel a negative belief about himself I thought that he might consider his behaviour from a different perspective. We chatted for a while and eventually I succeeded in explaining to him the power our thoughts have on the ‘reality’ we each personally experience.
Why is it that one man can eat whatever and as much of any kind of food and never put on extra weight and another man has only to look at food to put on the pounds?
The answer lies in the mindset of each man. One man believes, at the subconscious level, that he cannot put on weight regardless of what he eats and he is destined to be thin. The other believes he is destined to be fat. It is the belief that creates each man’s reality.
Regardless of what he want and how hard we pray if our core beliefs are not in line with our desire then our subconscious beliefs about ourselves and the world will always win out over what we consciously desire.
Going on diets and praying for a thin body is of no benefit if the mind clings to thoughts that negate all your efforts.
Simply focussing on the behaviour of overeating is an effective way of solving the problem. It is not until the core belief is addressed that any change can occur. The thoughts we think give a clue to the core beliefs we hold and the words we speak betray these thoughts.
The conversation made the young man think more deeply about why he continued to eat junk food though he claims he wanted to ‘get ripped’. The seed has been planted for him to do some introspection and I am confident that when he is ready he will address the core beliefs that prevent him from achieving his goals.
By the time most of us reach adulthood we have accumulated enough experience to deal with most of the challenges that life throws at us. Every experience we have ever had and the way we dealt with each of these experiences is stored in the subconscious. Whenever we encounter a similar experience we automatically deal with it the way we did before and this is how we develop conditioned reactions so that we don’t have to think about inventing the wheel every time we want to drive a car.
Problems arise, however, when we are faced with challenges that we have never encountered before and especially when these challenges are perceived as life threatening. Most people have never been mugged or have had a gun put to their head but during such events most people freeze unless they have had the experience before and learned how to deal with it. It is during this ‘freeze stage’ that a person under attack enters a state of hypnosis as the victim searches the subconscious for instructions on what to do. It is during this stage that the mind takes snap shots of everything and this includes images, smells, tastes, sensations, sounds and , of course, feelings. These are all stored in the files labelled ‘uncategorized’ to be dealt with when the emergency has passed. The problem is that most people do not deal with the traumatic event and all of the things that were stored in the ‘uncategorized’ file remain active until this is done.
If at the time of the traumatic incident there was freshly cut grass in the vicinity then every time the victim smells freshly cut grass, even years later, the subconscious triggers the same feelings of anxiety the person felt when the original incident occurred. Symptoms such as asthma or hay fever could be physical manifestations of the inner emotional turmoil triggered by the freshly cut grass.
Here at Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic in Peel, Isle of Man we specialize in the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder with 100% success rate to date.

Sometimes it is difficult to spot the difference between an unhappy, moody teenager and a depressed teenager. With so much upheaval what with peer pressure, exam pressure, relationships with family members, opposite sex, same sex, not to mention all those hormones causing havoc resulting in huge mood swings.
However, findings show that one in eight teenager exhibit some symptoms of teen depression. If left this depression may turn into a more serious debilitating condition. Help is out there though and the earlier you seek that help for your child the better!
Some of the symptoms to look out for are:
Sadness, anxiety or a feeling of hopelessness
Pains in head or tummy
Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
Self consciousness about body
Difficulty making decisions
Excessive or inappropriate guilt
Loss of appetite or overeating
Irresponsible behaviour e.g. playing truant, stealing, forgetting chores
Staying awake at night and sleeping late during the day
Drop in grades
Excessive use of alcohol or drugs
Preoccupation with death and dying
Staying in bedroom for hours after school
Not every child presents with every symptom but if you can mark some of those listed above maybe it is time to check out what is going on with your son/daughter.
The first step is to contact your GP and arrange for a psychological check up for your child. You will be better informed then which help would best suit your child.
At Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic we have noticed an increase in the numbers of teenagers who are coming for help suffering from teen depression. We offer a Free Initial Consultation for parents and teen to assess the conditions and to ascertain the therapy best suited for the individual child. For many, many teens the results are very positive as we empower them to take control back, to release themselves from the cycle of negative thoughts which result in negative feelings. We work with their GP who is the primary carer and if medication is prescribed the client continues to take it until told otherwise by his doctor. However, the therapy we provide gets to the root cause of the problem which not only gives the client the tools to let go of these all consuming negative thoughts/ feelings once and for all and live life as it should be lived … each day a gift to be enjoyed!
