Hypnotherapy and Sports Performance

Hypnosis has become more popular among sports people

Hypnosis and sports performance have had a long and successful history together.  In 1956 the Russians took 11 hypnotherapists to Melbourne and today many, many of our very best sports people, in all different sporting arenas, use this wonderful tool to help them to achieve their very best.

Amateur sports people use hypnosis to achieve peak performances no matter what age, level or sporting ability.  More and more swimming, hockey, football clubs, to name but a few, use the services of a hypnotherapist in order help their players achieve their full potential.  Tiger Woods has used a hypnotherapist to gain a mental edge on his opponents down through the years.

How hypnosis helps sports performance

By a combination of:

  • Positive mental imagery and the rehearsal  of success in the future ( see it happen now, feel it happen now)
  • Relaxation techniques which allow you to focus only on success and your game/race strategy
  • Letting go of all negative thought patterns and beliefs
  • Self belief

Hypnosis is a relaxed state of consciousness, in other words the athlete has blocked out all unwanted distractions and thoughts to allow him to focus only on the goal at hand.  This is the key to success, 80% of winning is in the mind,  20% is ability!  Being in a relaxed state he is in a hyper focused state which can mean the difference between success and failure.

Athlete and Hypnotherapist working together as a team

All athletes have had times when they did not achieve what they had hoped to achieve and often the negative feelings of failure stay with them long after the event has passed. Often the negative reactions to such events are stored in the subconscious mind to be activated every time the athlete finds himself in competition.  This is where the Hypnotherapist helps the athlete to “pluck out” these unwanted and totally unhelpful thoughts and feelings that get in the way of success

We know that there are two parts to the mind; the conscious and the subconscious.  The conscious is that logical and reasoning part, the part we use in decision making.  The subconscious is where we store all past experiences and the feelings we associate with them, all our memories are in there, our associations and our learned responses.  So we don’t have to think about walking because we have learned that at about 12 months, it is all stored in the subconscious mind.  Everything we do or think often enough is stored in there in the subconscious mind and if we think or practise negative thoughts or actions, well then these automatically come to the fore each time we find ourselves in a similar situation.  What this means for an athlete is if negative thoughts or actions become a habit then this will result in a reduced level of performance.

Athletes want to perform to the best of their ability so they must prepare not only their body but their mind. The mind commands and the body obeys. Through hypnosis a therapist can provide the athlete with positive suggestions which will replace any old limiting beliefs or thoughts.  Once these new and positive suggestions are accepted by the subconscious mind then the athlete sees and feels himself to be at his best, performing at his best.

Sports hypnotherapy for young people

Many of our young athletes are starting out on a hard road of self discipline and they need plenty of support and encouragement. All that I have said above is pertinent to young athletes but I would add that it important too that these young impressionable people are often subjected to bullying tactics not only by their peers but by other parents and adults.  Hypnotherapy can help in this area to enable a child to rise above this, handle these situations with strength and not allow themselves go down the road of victim which may have a long term detrimental effect on their confidence and performance.

How Billy Mills Used Self Hypnosis to Win the 10,000m Olympic Final in 1964.  It was the first time an American had won and he had to improve his best time by 2 minutes to do it.

Meditation

What is Meditation

Meditation is an ancient method devised thousands of years ago by people who realised that the self we think we are is a false self and responsible for the illusion we have become trapped in. These people realised that in order to pierce the veil of illusion which they called maya it would be necessary for us to still the false self and make it quiet for long enough so that we can experience the true self.

The Ego

The false self is nowadays called the ego. Everything we see in this world we see through the ego and it is the ego that gives meaning to everything we see and experience in this world. The real meaning lies hidden beneath the meaning the ego has written over everything and that is the illusion or maya they referred to.

In order to experience the real self they came up with the idea to  focus the ego so that it is eventually concentrated on only one thought or activity. Once this is achieved it would then be relatively easy to drop that one thought or activity and be in the world free from the ego and its interpretations. The state would be a state of no thought.

Dropping The Ego

In order to achieve this state they practised, in many cases, for years. The ego, however, does not  relinquish its power over us so easily and it places distractions before  us as we get closer to the state of no thought. Many people abandon the practice as a result of the temptations presented to them. The distractions or temptations  I refer to range from an increase in mental activity and a focus on worries or questions to a discovery of special psychic powers. Faithfully adhering to the practice of meditation in which the ego is completely dropped, results in discovering the true self or Higher Self.

The High C

The term Higher Self or High C was coined by  Phyllis Krystal who wrote a number of books about the subject two of which are:

Because we are conditioned from birth to believe in the illusion created by the ego few question what everyone believes to be reality. In Cutting of the Ties that Bind Phyllis Krystal describes how to connect to the High C and undo the conditioning that holds us captive that keeps us spell bound by our beliefs.

How to Meditate

You can meditate anywhere, any time sitting on the floor or in a chair. As long as you are comfortable all that is required to meditate is that you fix your mind on something for a period of time and with practice spend longer and longer periods with the mind concentrated in this way. Should stray thoughts enter your awareness simply acknowledge them and let them pass the way you would acknowledge a bird that comes into view and flies away.  Thoughts are like trains that pull into the station of your mind. You can remain in the station or board the train of thought. The choice is and always has been yours.

The thing you choose to focus your mind on can be anything that registers through any one or combination of the five senses. You could focus on the face of a picture symbolising God or the face of your mother or father. You could focus on a sound perhaps the sound of a clock in the room. There is no reason why you could not focus on a body sensation like the rise and fall of your tummy or chest as you breathe or even a taste. You could of course combine a picture with a sound or a body sensation with a sound as I do. I focus my mind on the sensation of the air entering and leaving through the tip of my nose and as I breathe in I hear myself saying the word in and as I breathe out I hear myself saying the word  out. You could try various combinations until you find the one that just feels right for you. The point here is to observe rather than control. So if you are observing the breath then you do not interfere with it in any way. That was what I found hard in the beginning because my mind tended to change the rhythm of my breathing when I focussed on it. With perseverance your ego relinquishes control and you just are!

Falling asleep or finding yourself on a thought train are both distractions and with practice you will learn to avoid these. Remember the aim of meditation is the dropping of ego so that judgement and analytical activity is suspended. The first stage of mediation is really self hypnosis and the frequency of the brain waves in this state of mind is predominantly alpha which is about 10 Hz.  As you progressively quiet the mental activity the frequency of the brain waves decreases and you achieve deeper levels of meditation.

I would simply warn against having any expectation of the experience as expectation is a function of the ego and as such will set you up for self sabotage. I would warn against distraction especially the ones that make you feel that you have special psychic abilities. Simply relax, focus the mind on one thought until that thought is dropped. That is the essence and end of meditation.

Secondary Benefits of Meditating

By meditating regularly you will find yourself feeling more centred, happier, healthier and with your mind uncluttered you will feel more purposeful and confident. You will undoubtedly experience many benefits, physically, emotionally and spiritually but these are more a consequence of the practice rather than the goal but sometimes that is enough for many people and that is fine too.

Hypnotherapy For Senior Citizens

As Old As Your Fears by Chrysalis

Home Visits

Over the past number of years I have worked very successfully with older people covering a range of conditions including insomnia, pain relief, depression, skin disorders, tinnitus, terminal cancer and anxiety, to mention but a few.  Some of these clients were too incapacitated to come to Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic in Peel so home visits were arranged.

Hypnosis

First of all let me talk a little about hypnosis and who can or cannot be hypnotised.  Hypnosis is a state of relaxation, during hypnosis we allow our conscious mind to relax so that our subconscious mind comes forward and when this happens we can do some wonderful healing and life changing work.  There are only two types of people who cannot be hypnotised; those who are severely mentally incapacitated and those who choose not to be hypnotised.  The first type really are people who cannot respond to instructions however this may not always be the case with people who suffer age related conditions.

Success Stories

One of the oldest people I worked with was a lady in her nineties who was very deaf, had lost much of her memory and was suffering from insomnia.  This lady’s family contacted me from overseas to see if I could help her to sleep as she hadn’t slept for nine weeks.  I paid her a visit in her nursing home and although she was very deaf I saw immediately that she was exhausted and in need of help.  That first visit was strange in that it was the first time I shouted at someone to Relax!  In fact, this lady responded very well to touch and although she could not hear every word I said it was my touch on her hand and the tone of my voice which allowed her to go into hypnosis almost immediately.  The next visit saw me better prepared as I took my hypno-equipment with me including headphones so that she could easily hear every word I said.  Like all my clients this lady received her personalised CD which she listened to every night when she put her light out at 10pm.  From that night forward her routine changed, she slept for longer each night until she was sleeping five hours per night which given her age and the fact she dozed in her armchair during the day she, her family and I were very pleased with these results.

Another client I treated was for fear of choking when swallowing her tablets.  This client had to take oral medication in the form of large tablets every day at a certain time.  She called me to enquire if I could help and as with all people who are interested in our therapies I invited her in for a Free Initial Consultation.  She was very agitated and anxious about taking such large tables which could not be halved or broken into smaller pieces.  After eliciting information and explaining the therapy we embarked on a very successful course of therapy which not only alleviated the fear and anxiety but also helped her with pain management.

Sometimes older people have fears and anxiety about the approach of death and may be unable or unwilling to talk to their family about this.  Relaxation techniques are easily learned and once put into practise clients are free to enjoy the remaining time however long or short that may be.

Age Doesn’t Matter When It Comes To Healing

I have spoken about older people who may be suffering from either emotional or physical conditions which may be greatly relieved by hypnotherapy but there are many people out there who at this stage in their lives realise that there are changes they wish to make, changes for the better allowing them to really be themselves .  For them hypnotherapy is like a new journey of discovery!    Who is this person who behaves and reacts in the same way to the same situations?  Why is this happening over and over again?  For these clients who come to our clinic we suggest Analytical Hypnotherapy and together we embark on an inner journey where I am merely the guide and the client is following their route to freedom.  You know it doesn’t matter what age freedom is achieved, even if it is only for a few months or many years the feeling of discovering the real you without conditioning or limitations from the past is wonderful.  Both Xavier and I have worked with many, many older people over the years who in their last years just want to experience and enjoy this freedom. Their self esteem and self confidence grows because they become the person they really always wanted to be.

Society Needs Your Experience And Wisdom

Older people, like younger people, have their worries and insecurities but unlike younger people they tend to be less willing to open up about these to others.  Spouses, family members and friends may have died and so loneliness may make them very isolated and vulnerable.  With the aid of hypnotherapy life can be made meaningful once again and that person who felt “passed it” can once again take their rightful place in community life.
