What Can be Treated with Hypnotherapy

My wife Mary and I run our own private Hypnotherapy Practice in Peel, Isle of Man where we employ a combination of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy to treat conditions with an emotional root cause. To see a list of some the conditions we treat please follow the link  What Can Be Treated

Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic in Peel, Isle of Man

Our Private Hypnotherapy Practice is called Setanta after the great Irish legendary warrior, Cú Chulainn. The name conjures up in me the idea that we are not our bodies and as such are not limited by the physical restraints placed upon us by identifying with our bodies. Setanta symbolised courage and integrity and the energy of never giving up in the face of any challenge he faced. By naming our clinic Setanta my wife and I seek to identify with this great Irish legend in his principles and work ethic.

Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic Media Presence

As a way to inform our community of the work we do we set up a website SetantaClinic.com and we also created a Facebook Fan Page called Setanta.Hypnotherapy.Clinic both of which we take very seriously. The website also has a blog which we regularly update with posts which explain the work we do from various perspectives and the Facebook Page which reflects our ideas and what we stand for.

Enquiry asking about Hypnotherapy and Science

We often receive enquiries through our website and Facebook Fan page and only just today we received an enquiry from someone asking about Hypnotherapy in relation to dissonance and mirror neurons.

From the enquiry and the phraseology of the comment it seemed that the person had equated what we did with a notion of hypnotherapy was based on suggestion therapy, i.e. Hypnotherapy was a method of conditioning the mind with repeated suggestions to change a behaviour.

I recognised immediately the futility of engaging in any discussion which did not fit this person’s idea of truth. I sent him some links to article my wife and I had written on the subject of Hypnotherapy and urged him to read them first. In my mind I thought it would be sensible that he acquainted himself with our working model of Hypnotherapy rather that us entering into conversation about Hypnotheraspy based on what he believed it to be. Without reading the articles I received an instant reply which read … “Oh ok ….delegation??”

I didn’t wish him to feel that I was ignoring him or that I was unable to answer his questions so the first step was for me to identify his perspective. He revealed his perspective when he said:

I was studying neurology (from a buddhist point if view) n was interested in its effects on the dissonance or mirror neurons !”

Science tries to Make Sense of Non-Sense

I then followed with a reply explaining the futility of trying to explain truth based on belief. I tried to explain how Science was no where nearer to explaining the world than Religion was to explaining God:

I see now where you are coming from. It is my view that scientists seek to make sense of what they observe and in every generation old theories are replaced by new ones. The reason why science is no closer to the absolute truth about anything is because scientists are human beings and all human beings rely on perception to make sense of what they observe. Perception is subjective and as such nothing absolute can ever be based upon it and this basic fact seems to continue to allude the science community. (The same holds for people who try to expalin God using their beliefs as a yardstick.)

Scientists have observed that certain neurons are fired in certain circumstances but if you are familiar with Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle you will also be aware that whatever we seek to observe, we change and in the act of observing we actually invalidate the observation!

Hypnosis simply affords people the opportunity to suspend their critical factor to the degree that they are enabled to entertain ideas that are not in keeping with their own core belief system.

A person who is suffering an illness also holds a core belief in the illness. If the therapist was to simply say that their illness is as a result of what the client believes then that would conflict with their core belief and alienate the therapist who would then be unable to help. That is where Psychotherapy comes in.

Hypnosis heals nothing, all it does is open the gate. Once the gate is open the client then uses his/her own inner resources to affect the changes they desire. It is not the therapist who cures anyone of anything either. It is the clients themselves who cure themselves. Whether or not certain neurons are firing at the time when the changes are affected may be of interest to scientists who love to then find patterns to back up whatever theory is fashionable at the time, is of little relevance and help in a process that cannot be explained intellectually but can be felt emotionally.

I myself ,along with my Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy qualifications, also have a degree in Physics and Mathematics. You and I are both scientists with completely differing belief systems but that is fine by me. I have no wish to convince you or anyoneof the beliefs I hold ‘today’, but since you asked I explained what they were.

There are people in the world who will die for their beliefs, I on the other hand see beliefs as the way we play with ideas and not worth dying for. In my world no belief is truth and that is why it is easier for me to let go of anything that holds me back in my life. Ideas are like birds that fly through the sky. No bird can make a mark on the sky and it is our choice to follow the flight of a particular bird across the sky or turn our attention to another one.

This is as far as I will go with this conversation as I will be busy with clients for the rest of the day and I also am aware that is not my place to question what you believe to be true. In hypnosis however all ideas can be entertained and that is the magic of hypnosis. You have a great day and good luck with your own personal journey. Thank you for the conversation.

The conversation ended and the person thanked me for the communication intimating that he might follow up at a later time.

Belief is the Filter through which we all make our own sense of the World and our Experiences

I see the world through my own filter and believe that the very best I can do when it comes to explaining it is to see it as positively as I can maintaining the awareness that the sense I make of it is actually made up in my own mind and completely subjective.

The beliefs I hold about the world today may not be the ones I hold tomorrow or in the next hour and I am fine with that. Beliefs are ideas in which we have invested our energy. Energy does not need to be stuck anywhere and when we realise this we are free to experience the world any way we desire.

Life is a game and it is belief that makes it serious. When we learn to change our beliefs at will we regain the power to be children again living in the now playing the game of life!

Repression and Disease

A baby places no labels on the objects she comes across. A lump of coal holds as much wonder to a child as would a diamond. A child does not assign meaning or value to the object she encounters until taught to do so.

Our parents are usually our first teachers. The value and meaning we place on ourselves, others and things are hugely influenced by our parents. This does not mean that we will accept all of their judgements. This depends on a number of factors and is unique to each individual. We will accept some judgements from Mother and reject others from Father and vice versa. This is why all the children in a family with an alcoholic parent will not become alcoholics.

Later our teachers and peers also influence the value and meaning we place on things including ourselves and others. The meaning a bullied child will place on things will be different to one who is respected and loved.

The meaning we assign not just to things but to our experiences depends on our previous experiences. We compare with the past what we experience in the present and this is how we recreate the past, time and time again. This is all done spontaneously at the subconscious level below the level of our conscious awareness so we have no conscious control over the process and its effect on our lives.

When a person experiences something that she has never experienced before the mind searches for something similar to compare it with in order to ‘make sense’ of it. When the mind cannot find a similar experience, to compare it with, the experience is repressed in order to be dealt with at a later stage, when we develop the necessary emotional resources to do so.

This ‘repression’ buried in the subconscious does not stay quiet. We receive reminders for the subconscious letting us know that we have unfinished business. The reminders start quietly but if ignored intensify to a point where we experience physical pain and disease. Most people view these reminders as an inconvenience and tend to turn to medication to suppress the symptoms. There are, however, those who see the physical symptoms as a call from the subconscious to be heeded rather than an inconvenience to be subdued.

Hypno-Psychotherapy serves to heed the call from the subconscious and address the buried repression. By resolving the emotional root cause of a symptom in this way we heal ourselves and regain on inner balance.

What to Expect in Therapy

Transference is very important dynamic in Hypno-Psychotherapy in that it provides the client with the opportunity to address in the present a problem from the past.

The problem was buried in the subconscious because the client did not have the emotional resources to deal with it when it occurred in the past.

The therapist provides a safe setting for the client to address the problem and guides the client to its resolution.

If the problem was originally with a parent then the client will perceive the therapist in that role and react accordingly. The client will gradually become aware of the dynamic and realize how the original problem had been influencing his/her relationships with perceived authority figures throughout his/her life.

At the end of therapy the transference ends and client and therapist are released from the roles they played in order to facilitate the change sought by the client.

The client is no longer subconsciously adversely offended by or influenced by past events as the associated negative emotion will have been released in the therapy.

In a nutshell, Hypno-Psychotherapy provides the individual with the opportunity to address the emotional root cause of a physical symptom or condition at source. The symptoms are seen as a metaphor for the underlying root cause and as such serve only to make the client pay attention.

During the course of therapy the therapist facilitates the healing process by providing the client with the opportunity to play out and resolve what he/she was unable to in the past. During the process the client makes the connections and repressions buried in the subconscious are uncovered and the power they wielded over the client consciously understood. Emotion is released spontaneously when a repression is uncovered in this way and the desired change is achieved.

Hypno-Psychoanalysis for Anorexia, Bulimia and Other Eating Disorders

What is an eating disorder?

The definition of eating disorders is ‘a range of psychological disorders characterised by abnormal or disturbed eating habits’. Most people are familiar with the disorders Anorexia and Bulimia but are less familiar with Binge Eating Disorder (without purging), Compulsive Overeating and Orthorexia (obsession with only eating certain types of healthy foods)

Anorexia: the term anorexia nervosa means ‘loss of appetite for nervous reasons’.

Physical symptoms include: rapid and dramatic weight loss; loss of menstrual periods; growth of downy hair on body; dizzy spells/fainting; muscle loss; felling cold; tiredness; dry skin and hair loss.

Behavioural symptoms could include: restrictions of food intake; counting calories; cutting out many groups of food, skipping meals, excessive exercise, withdrawal from social events and wearing lots of layers of clothing.

Psychological symptoms: inability to concentrate; mood swings; depression and anxiety around meal times.

Bulimia: the term bulimia nervosa means ‘the nervous hunger of an ox’.

Physical symptoms: swelling of the cheeks or jaw areas; discolouration/erosion of teeth; bad breath; sore throat and tiredness.

Behavioural symptoms could include: binging, purging (vomiting); use of laxatives, excessive exercise, disappearing after meals; hoarding foods; withdrawal from social outings.

Psychological symptoms: an inability to concentrate; mood swings; severe depression and extreme anxiety especially around food.

What are the dangers of eating disorders?

Anorexia has the highest death rate (20%) of any mental disorder!  Eating disorders can cause great physical damage: heart failure; extremely low blood pressure; osteoporosis; irregular bowel movements; fertility problems; kidney failure; and if bulimic, also gastric rupture; damaged stomach lining; ulcers and tooth decay.

Who gets eating disorders?

The majority of people who suffer from eating disorders are usually above average intelligence, very high achievers, perfectionists and extremely competitive.  Traditionally teenage girls were in the majority of those suffering but younger girls, older women and men are now presenting with the symptoms.

Hypno-Psychoanalysis to treat Eating Disorders

The first and most important thing to say about any eating disorder is that it is NOT about the food.  Food is the symptom of the underlying issue.  In other words, it is the tool chosen by the subconscious mind to cope with and/or deal with the feelings going on underneath.

It is all about control!    The sufferer’s intake of food may be the one and only thing in their live that they are in control of when everything else is out of control.  The initial diet or desire to lose a little weight starts off well as the person controls what they eat but then suddenly the eating disorders emerges and it controls the person.  When this happens their thoughts and feelings are no longer under their control but under the control of the disorder.

The underlying belief almost always comes down to the belief that they are not loved, that they are not good enough and they are not worth anything. Sometimes it is about not wanting to grow up!

Having a condition, having a label makes them important … a ‘somebody’. The more severe the condition and symptoms the more important they feel as their family and friends worry and do all they can to heal their son, daughter, wife, sister etc.  However, many sufferers hold on to their condition because the loss of attention and support may be too great at a psychological level.

Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic

No two clients who come to Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic are treated the same because no two eating disorder clients are the same. The first step is to help each client to deal with the underlying reasons behind why they are doing what they are doing.  The reasons are complex and there may be layers and layers that need peeling away,  The mainstream medical approach to treating eating disorders is first to get the patient to start eating and then to deal with the psychological causes for the disorder.  This may be a bit like putting the cart before the horse and why these disorders are so very difficult to treat successfully.

What we do is help the client to sort out the head first in order to be able and willing to eat again.  Working with clients with eating disorders takes some time.  It is not a magical therapy that suddenly makes everything alright again but given time and trust there is hope for the client who is prepared to stay in therapy and take part in the recovery process.

The Purpose of Pain and Suffering

Faulty Self-Concept

People usually do not enter psychotherapy with the goal of changing their perception of self. On the contrary most people who enter psychotherapy are completely unaware that it is their faulty self-concept that is at the root of their suffering. They initially seek to preserve their perception of self exactly as it is but without the suffering that goes with it.

Fear of Change

Probably the hardest thing for any human being to do is to change. Most people will do everything in their power to maintain the status quo and will resist change as if their lives depended on it. Why else would a woman remain in a marriage with an abusive husband?  Why would someone who wants to lose weight continue to overeat? Why would a woman who notices a lump in her breast or a man who notices a lump in his testicle ignore it or delay seeing a doctor?

Change ultimately involves taking a step into the unknown and that, for most people, is a scarier alternative to the pain they continue to experience in their lives. The pain that people experience is in direct proportion to the resistance they exert to change. It is only when a person let’s go and steps into the unknown that pain disappears.

Handing Over Our Power to Authority Figures is Not the Answer

Pain, whether it is physical or emotional, is a guide that directs us to make the changes we need to make in our lives. Many people, however, see pain as a nuisance and something to be alleviated, numbed and avoided at all costs. Rather than seeing emotional pain as guiding us to make the changes we are resisting many people turn to medication to alleviate it. Many turn to psychologists and counselors to take their pain away. Very few own their pain and see it as a guiding light that could be used to lead them to make the changes that life judges they are ready for.  Most would rather hand their power over to an authority figure they set up in their minds as having special powers to cure them. Even when the medication prescribed does not alleviate their pain they hold on to the belief they hold about the authority figure and continue to take medication, often for years.

Pain used as a guiding light in Hypno-Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy, if conducted in a way that avoids the influence of either the client’s or therapist’s ego can be a very effective way of affecting the necessary changes the client has been resisting. Rather than seeing the therapist as someone with special powers to take away a person’s pain a more constructive approach would be to see the therapist as a partner who willing chooses to enter into an agreement with change as its purpose.

The people who come to psychotherapy to alleviate their emotional pain and suffering normally do not see that they will ultimately have to change their minds about something that is preventing them from changing. This something is the way they perceive themselves and the world they perceive as outside of themselves and responsible for their suffering. Most of them come with an idea that they can in some way control their suffering to the degree that it is tolerable so that they can continue as before. At first the idea, that by defending their perceptions they are clinging to their suffering, does not seem to register but with each session change gradually occurs as both client and therapist begin to move toward each other finding  common ground for agreement.

It is pain that is responsible for bringing client and therapist together and it is the resulting changes achieved that ultimately relieve the pain and set both free to continue to their next stages of development.

Hypnotherapy for Young Children and Teenagers

Why Hypnotherapy is so successful for children

Children are naturally open to hypnotherapy as they have few if any misconceptions about hypnosis.  Most of them, especially the younger ones, have never heard of stage hypnotists so an explanation about the vast differences between what I do in therapy and what stage hypnotists do on stage is not necessary for the young clients. Mum or Dad may need to be reassured but I take care to answer all questions thoroughly during our Free Consultation.  Treatment is explained to each client using appropriate language to ensure they understand every step of this journey to recovery.

One of the reasons hypnotherapy is so successful for children is that children use their imaginations on a daily basis for much longer than adults.  They can easily move from being a fairy princess to a dinosaur or a character in their favourite television programme in seconds.  So when I ask them to imagine or visualise themselves in their bed or at the hospital, for example, they can do so immediately.

Solution Focused Child Centred Therapy

In therapy it is the child’s needs which are paramount and as such I work very closely with each child making them fully understand this.  Once the children realise that they have a say in the final outcome therapy naturally flows.  The therapy is solution focused, that means that the child, parent, and I all work together to get the best outcome for the child.

Though treatment is child centred parents play a very important role in the progress of therapy.  Positive reinforcement is so important between sessions and long after sessions have finished.  This may mean asking the parents to change the way they talk about the problem while the child is receiving treatment.  A change in tense can be so significant; setting the problem in the past and allowing the possibility of change to sink into the child’s subconscious mind much more quickly.

In the western world a child is anyone under the age of eighteen and teenagers respond as well as younger children.  Needless to say more appropriate language and questioning is necessary to engage a teenager.

The power of belief

Our expectations are determined by what we believe. What we believe about life and the world around us influences what we expect to happen to us and others. It is our belief systems that determine how we perceive people. It is our belief systems that determine how we perceive situations and experiences. At a subconscious level we learn how to react to people and situations and we make decisions regarding our behaviour and condition in order to fit our belief systems. The adjustments made at the subconscious level can result in symptoms we call allergies, disease or illness and behaviours we call compulsive, addictive or destructive. This all happens below our consciousness so we are unaware of these developments until we start to experience the results of these decisions taken at the subconscious level. At the subconscious level symptoms and behaviour patterns are chosen with our best interests and highest good in mind but these very decisions may well be responsible for feelings of unhappiness and hopelessness we might feel right now.

Karmic constraints

The decisions made at the subconscious level are made within the constraints of the belief systems we cling to and in order to affect change then it is necessary for us to loosen those constraints and open ourselves to seeing life and the world from a wider variety of perspectives. The degree of our happiness is governed largely by our capacity to let go of any belief that results in causing us pain or unhappiness. This is, however, more easily said than done because the beliefs that we hold are developed over many lifetimes.

Pain and suffering have a purpose

Unhappiness and pain have a purpose in that without them we would never question our perceptions. Pain and unhappiness are merely reminders for us not to get too comfortable with our perceptions because they are not real. Our purpose here is to discover the truth of who we really are through the veil of the belief systems we use to define ourselves.

Many are unwilling to heed the reminders and remain slaves to their beliefs imagining that the pain and unhappiness they experience are outside their control. It is the willingness to change and embrace the adventure of life, the way a child experiences things for the first time, without any preconceived ideas, criticisms or judgments.  All the while trusting in that higher consciousness, within each of us, for our guidance and inner security …  then we start to ensure our peace, happiness and fulfillment.

Hypno-Psychotherapy at Setanta Clinic in Peel

Hypno-Psychotherapy is a journey within through layer after layer of beliefs that block us from seeing who we truly are and preventing us from achieving our destiny. You don’t have to suffer from a mental disorder or disease to undergo Hypno-Psychotherapy and everyone who has undergone the treatment has reported only the most positive results. If you are interested in learning about the mind and how to navigate the subconscious to in order to release anything that may be blocking your personal development and self realization then Hypno-Psychotherapy may be for you.

Attracting Your Perfect Partner

Finding your Soul Mate is not as random as many believe

We all have, at one time or another, felt lonely and wished that we had someone we could share our lives with. Many who made this wish found their perfect partner, others are still alone to this day and yet others found and keep finding people that just bring them grief and unhappiness.

Many believe that finding your soul mate is a random event that is just down to luck. Others believe that such unions are made in heaven and there are many who don’t believe in the idea of a perfect partner. Whatever you believe is exactly what your subconscious will endeavour to create for you.

It is our core belief system that determines what we deem to be true and what we dismiss as rubbish. What most people fail to realise is that a belief is an opinion that you have labelled as true. Many fail to realise that it is our belief in opinions that give them the energy to create our life experiences.

The Law of Attraction

There are however a growing number of people who are realising that they need not be a slave to belief and have learned to use the dynamic of imbuing opinion with enough energy to replace their core beliefs with beliefs that deliberately create what they want. James Allen, author of the book As A Man Thinketh was one such person and the ideas he put forward are now reflected in The Secret by Rhonda Byrne and championed by many famous people under the title The Law of Attraction.

In a nutshell, you get what you believe to be true of yourself and the world you live in. The world and your experiences are physical manifestations of what you believe to be true without any shadow of a doubt. In fact you would dismiss any idea that does not agree with your world view and that is the power of belief. When you learn to harness this power to serve you only then do you become master of your own destiny. Until then the world is something that happens to you and you feel as if you are in a boat with no oars being buffeted sometimes by a raging sea or going nowhere when the wind subsides. That is why our life experience is sometimes described as a see saw between sorrow and joy.

When you fully realise that thoughts and opinions are simply building blocks for the life you wish to experience you are then free to believe those that are in harmony with your goals and discard those that seek to sabotage your efforts. The key is in realising that the world you see and the life you experience are material external manifestations of the thoughts you hold true, deep within yourself in your subconscious. Change your beliefs and you change your world.

Attracting Your Perfect Partner Hypnosis Audio Download by Mary Nathan

It is for this reason I have created an audio which you can purchase and download from Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic Website Downloads page called Attracting Your Perfect Partner by Mary Nathan. Using the power of hypnosis to access the subconscious the audio serves to teach you how to replace the beliefs that are preventing you from attracting your perfect partner with beliefs that will make you a magnet for your soul mate.

Joining dating sites, going out to clubs and pubs are wasted activities if the mindset is not right. The mind commands and the world obeys. It is not the other way around. We are not taught this in school and most of us are not taught this at home not because there is a conspiracy but mainly because people are ignorant of the laws that govern thought and how it can be used to serve us.

Suggestion Therapy Explained

Photo credit to: Whole Life Hypnosis

Conscious and Subconscious Mind

There are two parts to your mind…the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. The conscious mind is the mind you use when you are awake and engaged in your daily life, you use it to learn anything new, to analyse, evaluate and judge.  When you sleep at night you give your conscious mind a well earned rest from all the thousands of thoughts that come in and out throughout the day.

The subconscious mind is that part of you that stores everything that ever happened to you, it also allows your hair to grow and your heart to beat without you even having to think about these things consciously.

If you have learned bad habits then they, too, have been stored in the subconscious mind and are being activated automatically. Anything stored in your subconscious mind in this way is out of your conscious control.  You automatically react in certain ways in certain circumstances and are unable to behave in any other way because your subconscious mind is stronger than your conscious mind.  This is where hypnosis comes in, by learning how to deliberately achieve the relaxed state of hypnosis you are relaxing the thinking conscious mind and allowing yourself access to your subconscious mind.

Suggestion Therapy

Suggestion Therapy is best suited helping clients to change habits of a life time, to relieve stress, to rid themselves of phobias, to Stop Smoking and for any symptoms or conditions which does not have an emotional root cause.  As a therapist I help the client to access their subconscious mind by guiding them into hypnosis, a state of relaxation.  Once that is achieved then with well constructed positive suggestions the client is enabled to make the changes he/she wishes to make.

By accessing the subconscious mind you are enabled to replace bad habits, change old limiting beliefs and embrace a brighter present and future.  What a nice present to give yourself.

All Hypnotherapy for children at our private practice, Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic in the Isle of Man employs Suggestion Therapy.

Suggestion Therapy as Practiced at Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic in Peel, Isle of Man

Suggestion Therapy comprises of three sessions in the majority of cases.  The first session is fact finding, clarifying the changes the client wants and I also teach them how to hypnotise themselves.  The second session comprises of a relaxation session in hypnosis which will encompass all the positive changes the client has asked for.  The client is given a personalised CD in this second session to take home which I make after the first session. The personalised CD has a relaxation introduction which is then followed by the positive suggestions to enhance the work done in session.  This must be listened to every night for a minimum of 90 days.  The third session is dependent on what the client reports on the changes during the previous week or any issues that have arisen.  The work carried out in this session builds on the previous sessions so nothing is left to chance.  Each client who attends Setanta Hypnotherapy Clinic is an individual and as such our therapies are personalised to ensure the best outcome for each client.
